Oct. 9, 2007 - Fred Thompson stood a head taller than his fellow Republicans but he seemed in over his head as the CNBC debate began here. He wore the pained look of a man in need of a powerful digestive pill. But by the time the two-hour marathon ended, the new guy on the trail had gained just barely enough confidence, composure and credibility to make it to the next round of the GOP food fight. Fred didnt die today, said Ron Kaufman, one of Mitt Romneys top spin doctors.
Rudy Giuliani, trained for combat by the toughest press corps in the world (in New York), won the debate here in a few ways: by mentioning Hillary Clintons name every few seconds (a guaranteed applause line); by smacking down Ron Paul on the question of whether America had ever been attacked (Where were you on 9/11?); and by mixing it up with Romney on the question of who cut taxes and spending more (in fact, neither one of them is a real conservative on either matter.)
Giuliani also won by not losing, as Romney did when he declared that he would consult his lawyers before deciding whether he had the power as president to take out an Iranian nuclear facility. Romney may have been right on the constitutional procedure, but wrong in a debate where the objective was to woo hardline GOP voters.

Uh huh...
You go with that theory...
Yes it is. The Iraqis have repeated the same path of initial resistance, then realisation and acceptance that the Kurds did. The inhabitants of Iraq, especially the inhabitants of Anbar province, now know the Jihadists do NOT have their best interests at heart, and have turned on them. The Iraq war is all but won.
The war on the Iranian Regime is about to begin, please God.
So ...
"You shouldnt confuse the wealth of nations with the wealth of government".
That's incoherent? No - that's awesome. It was an answer worthy of Rush Limbaugh or Adam Smith.
"The tax-payer knows where that money is it's in his pocket" is incoherent? That's incoherent to you?
"The average 20 year old in Iraq knows more about national security than a 20 year veteran on Capitol Hill"
Surely you'll agree that THAT is fair comment?
FDT is evidently a Conservative's Conservative. Hopefully Americans will realize that the candidates with great hair aren't the ones who make the best Presidents.
You seem very much out of your depth on this board with these off-the-wall observations.
Howard Fineman and decent do not belong in the same sentence. These people want Giuliani to win.
No it is not. The question was not a fleeting target question. What will a general tell you about the War Powers Act of 1973? Obviously LAWYERS are involved in events like the bombing of Yugoslavia.

I like how you side with Fineman and Democrats to support Giuliani.
I agree: “But, certainly, what you want to do is to have the agreement of all the people...”
MATTHEWS: Governor Romney if you were president of the United States, would you need to go to Congress to get authorization to take military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities?
ROMNEY: You sit down with your attorneys and tell you what you have to do, but obviously the president of the United States has to do what’s in the best interest of the United States to protect us against a potential threat. The president did that as he was planning on moving into Iraq and received the authorization of Congress...
MATTHEWS: Did he need it?
ROMNEY: You know, we’re going to let the lawyers sort out what he needed to do and what he didn’t need to do. But, certainly, what you want to do is to have the agreement of all the people leadership of our government as well as our friends around the world where those circumstances are available.
What?
And you've been smoking what?
At the very least you'll have to admit that Fred looked very old last night. It's almost impossible to imagine that he and Romney are essentially the same age.
And the two best smack downs were provided by Fred.
First to Romneys well rehearsed “got to make sure I find a time to say this line knocking Fred”, Fred laughed and turned it back on Romney with humor.Fred’s off the cuff actor reference however said in humor hit a much deeper meaning.
And the quiet retort to Christopher...(I chuckle each time I think of that)...was priceless.
LOL this idea that he moves slow or talks slow cracks me up. I was raised in the south. Thompsons speech was perfectly modulated and his movements normal.
Why don’t you attack him on his comments? I don’t see alot of that going on when it comes to Thompson.
He looked like a normal 65 year old man, not like he made a pact with the devil to keep his plastic good looks.
****************
LOL! Good point. Romney keeps mentioning his "executive experience", which I think is a major mistake. Unfortunately for him, it's his biggest asset. Romney as Commander in Chief? I think not.
While I don't think Thompson was necessarily stellar, for Fineman to use as his first source an admitted Mitt Romney spin doctor is beyond belief.
It there were only one right answer to this question it would be this one, offered up by Fred Thompson:It's this kind of common sense that's going to propel Fred to the White House. In any close call, you should go to Congress, whether its legally required or not, because youre going to need the American people and Congress will help you if theyre voting for it or if they support it. Or leaders, especially in the opposite party, are convinced and looking at the evidence that this is the right thing to do, that will help you with the American people. And weve learned that, over the long term in any conflict, weve got to have the strong support of the American people.
They'll never do that to Fred's face, because they know that Fred will kick their asses, figuratively speaking. Just ask Mikey Moore. And Chrissy M.
So, by "consults with others" you mean checks with his lawyers?
