Near the end of World War II, Lt. John Withers, the leader of an all-black convoy, hid two young Holocaust survivors among his truck company -- a violation of Army orders. They stayed with his unit for more than a year as their health improved. "Peewee" and "Salomon" grew close to Lt. Withers and his unit. Over the years, he told and retold their tale to his two sons. One son set out to find them. He discovered that Salomon had died in 1993. But Peewee, he learned, was alive, a successful businessman in the U.S. Five decades later, Lt. Withers would change the man's life yet again.

Fascinating story — a good example of why American soldiers are considered the most magnanimous in the history of the world.
Wow.
What a story!
I agree with you that this would make a great movie. This is a wonderful story. Thanks for posting it.
Our GIs in WWII were renowned for being kind and helpful to refugees, especially kids.
My dad was in Italy the same time and place as Bill Mauldin. He said that lots of times the GIs would go back through the mess line, after giving their dinner to hungry local children. Army medics delivered babies and treated illnesses, GIs found work for people and shared what they had.
And they're still doing good in Iraq and Afghanistan. American soldiers are just about the most kind-hearted in the world.
Dang blurry monitor! You’re so right, this would make a great movie about the power of not holding on to hate, but looking forward to possibilities.
Wow. Yeah, this could be a great movie.
If anyone in H*llywood could remember that American GIs really are very professional and kind.
Both in WWII and now.
Thanks. I emailed this link to all my family and friends.
Our service men and women are truly doing God’s work throughout the world. They are fighting for freedom and feeding the needs of those they meet.
Anyone, that feels we fight only for ourselves, does not understand America, or Americans. It seems we are misunderstood by those that include some in our own Congress.

Long read - very, very good. I hope you find a quiet moment to spend the time on it. You’ll be glad you did. :o)
I am a disgusting sentimentalist. I was sniveling a bit myself.
Very moving. Puts your own problems in perspective when you read this. God Bless America.
Has anyone else heard of “Hell Above and Hell Below” by Richard H. Lewis?
He was a side gunner in a “flying fortress” that was shot down. The book tells the incredible story of his survival through the French underground and then captivity (after being ratted out by someone in the French underground) and ultimately being liberated.
Amazing story. Hollywood couldn’t even come up with the things he went through.
He lived across the street from me when I was a kid. I used to go visit with him in the evenings as he had a cold beer while lighting his grill. I knew he had served and desperately wanted to hear his stories but he very rarely talked about it and I knew enough not to push it. through the encouragement of his family, he later wrote his stories out and had it published.
If you can find it, I recommend it.
“I am a disgusting sentimentalist. I was sniveling a bit myself.”
I had to “go check on stuff in the garage” a few times before I finished reading the entire story.
What did you do to my monitor...?

We do have the resources, and most all the time, we share what we got
(even going without if need be)and we “play well with others”.
I’d also just be happy to have someone at least from
“The Anglosphere”
ride to my rescue.
e.g. these examples from “The Good War”:
