On This Day In History - October 9, 1967

Professional revolutionary "Che" Guevara is executed in Bolivia

Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, better known to the world as "Che" Guevara, is executed by Bolivian armed forces on this day in 1967. Born in Argentina, Guevara was a professional revolutionary who became involved in the Guatemalan revolution of the 1950s. It was during this time that he discovered Marxism and became a fervent convert to the philosophy. Following the overthrow of the Guatemalan government by a U.S.-sponsored coup in 1954, Guevara traveled to Mexico where he joined up with Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro.

In 1956, Castro, Guevara, and a small band of supporters landed in Cuba intent on overthrowing its government. When the initial attack did not succeed, Che joined Castro and the survivors in the wilds of Cuba, carrying on a guerilla war. In 1959, the Cuban government fell and Castro seized power. Guevara was put in charge of finance and economic planning for the revolutionary government. In 1960 he published Guerilla Warfare, in which he argued that armed struggle was necessary to free the masses from capitalistic exploitation.

By 1965, he faded from public life in Cuba for reasons still not entirely clear. He then reappeared in 1966 in Bolivia where he hoped to bring about a revolution. In October 1967, he was captured and executed by Bolivian troops. This outcome satisfied the U.S. government, under the leadership of President Lyndon B. Johnson, which viewed him as a dangerous agitator and had assisted the Bolivian government in its efforts to end Guevara's challenge.

Despite Che's death more than 30 years ago, his face is still familiar to millions around the world, adorning T-shirts, key chains, and posters. He is also a constant presence in Cuba, with his image painted on walls and buildings around the nation. Many compelling films have been made about the life of Che, including the 2004 Oscar-winning film The Motorcycle Diaries.

Children of Che Guevara Visit Iran

Aleida and Camilo Guevara, children of Castro pal and communist thug, Ernesto “Che” Guevara, recently paid a visit to Iran. Iranian Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad-Hossein Saffar Harandi paid tribute to Che Guevara and said Iran and Cuba have at least one point in common, both have “an abiding hatred of America.”

Harandi avowed that he has admired Cuba’s progress over the years, and congratulated Aleida and Camilo on their country’s “triumph over Western materialism and decadence. I only hope my country can do as well.”

Aleida Guevara said she and her brother were glad to be able to visit Iran. “We are here as representatives of the Cuban Revolution and are proud to announce our solidarity with Iran. Your Ayatollah Khomeini and our Fidel have so much in common. Both have been the victims of vicious propaganda. America has tried to portray Fidel as a brutal dictator, but this is a lie. He is loving and considerate. For my sixteenth birthday he gave me the ear of a counterrevolutionary, which I frequently wear as a necklace to this day.”

Aleida apologized for her brother’s inability to speak on his own behalf. “Since he has been reeducated all he can do is grin foolishly,” Aleida said. “But he, like all Cubans, is happy. That’s more than can be said for our countrymen who have been lured to America where they have no health insurance and are cruelly exploited by capitalist pigs.”

Born in Argentina, Che Guevara served as Castro’s right-hand man during the revolution. After several years as Cuba’s chief executioner, he left Cuba in 1965, reappearing the following year as an insurgent leader in Bolivia where he was captured by the Bolivian army and shot in 1967. He is commemorated by a tee shirt worn by communists and morons throughout Europe and the United States.

On a bus here last week and a POS with a Che T shirt
ready to get off and I said, so you like mass murderers.
He said, what...this. I said who and what. He had no
idea who he was and said he just liked the shirt.

Yes, and some of these folks vote!
When I see an employee wearing a Che t-shirt behind a counter, I leave the establishment.
Disgusting.
