Report says war on terror is fuelling al Qaeda

By Kate Kelland 12 minutes ago

Six years after the September 11 attacks in the United States, the "war on terror" is failing and instead fuelling an increase in support for extremist Islamist movements, a British think-tank said on Monday.

A report by the Oxford Research Group (ORG) said a "fundamental re-think is required" if the global terrorist network is to be rendered ineffective.

"If the al Qaeda movement is to be countered, then the roots of its support must be understood and systematically undercut," said Paul Rogers, the report's author and professor of global peace studies at Bradford University in northern England.

"Combined with conventional policing and security measures, al Qaeda can be contained and minimized but this will require a change in policy at every level."

He described the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq as a "disastrous mistake" which had helped establish a "most valued jihadist combat training zone" for al Qaeda supporters.

The report -- Alternatives to the War on Terror -- recommended the immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from Iraq coupled with intensive diplomatic engagement in the region, including with Iran and Syria.

In Afghanistan, Rogers also called for an immediate scaling down of military activities, an injection of more civil aid and negotiations with militia groups aimed at bringing them into the political process.

If such measures were adopted it would still take "at least 10 years to make up for the mistakes made since 9/11."

"Failure to make the necessary changes could result in the war on terror lasting decades," the report added.

Rogers also warned of a drift toward conflict with Iran.

“If the al Qaeda movement is to be countered, then the roots of its support must be understood and systematically undercut”

Every time we get closer to doing this the protesters, NYT, and others undercut our support and aid to terrorist’s support.

The only thing “fueling” the enemy is all the aid and comfort they are receiving from within our own borders.

This article is a good example of same.

Bombing radical mosques is how we would have handled this 60 years ago. Stick that in your “think tank”.

This is the way I look at it:

Iraq’s liberation has given us the ability to kill people who would join al qeada. Those people who would join al qead were probably not going to be my friend no matter what I would do.

So, we aint judgin’ them. We are just sending them to a place to be judged.

The report -- Alternatives to the War on Terror -- recommended the immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from Iraq ...

And then the muslims blame the US for the resulting genocide and that create more followers of militant Islam. Perhaps we should issue them all a lifetime supply of sunshine and lollipops so they love us, but that would result in resentment of the US who dare to think we are above them and they need our help, thus creating more followers of militant Islam. Maybe we should lay prostrate before them and allow them to wipe their feet on us but that would only make them consider us weak and thus create more followers of militant Islam. Sensing a trend?

Sure. If we had just done nothing after 911 they would have gone away and left us alone. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Oxford Research Group is pretty much a traditional pacifist body that argues that if the victims will simply give up the murderers will stop.

Total BS.

They aid the enemy.

You got it - Complete drivel -

Reality is AQ and its mimics have suffered one strategic defeat after another since Sept 11th, 2001 -

The straw man argument here as if there was a way to completely remove the threat of terrorism in the short run is absurd - Reality is we are doing exactly what has to be done to ensure both short-term security while moving toward long term success.

That is taking the fight to our enemies 24/7 (short term) while helping to establish an atmosphere for citizens throughout the ME to begin a form of self-deportation against radical Islam. By bringing in the values of self-worth and freedoms. The lacking of these is what allows the dictators and Mullahs to thrive within the ME.

Again, we are taking the fight to our enemies 24/7 throughout the ME, HOA and SE Asia. The notion that AQ and our enemies are better off because of this is foolishness.

Let's test their theory. We take these pukes to Baghdad, drop them off at the corner of Durka, Durka, Durka Avenue and Jihad Street and let them negotiate keeping their heads.

If they prove it works, let's try it.

In other words, run away. And then, expect a homicidal, militant ideology to collectively coo, "Awww. The West means us no harm or offense. Let's get together for a love-in."

Not. It amazes me that these dhimmi wanna-be's think that FIGHTING BACK when dealing w/ a death-cult somehow makes 'em mad.

Tell ya what, pacifists, dhimmis and assorted human refuse: YOU go over there by yourself and negotiate some intense engagements with these animals. Either put your money where you never-closing mouth is, or STFU.

I am gathering info that says they are a conservative group. But I believe British conservatives are the same as American liberals.
