If Rep. John Doolittle is the Republican nominee here in 2008, the seat is a certain loss for the GOP. ... Doolittle ... has pledged to fight plans to push him off the ballot in 2008. ... Charlie Brown, who nearly beat Doolittle in 2006, is back again. But given the Republican nature of this district, he needs Doolittle on the ballot to win.

What can I say, Dan ? This is a tragedy, but if you expect me to sit here and lie or pretend what is going on here isn’t, I can’t do that. I feel sorry for the Congressman, but it is how it is. ALL of us know what it’s like to be under attack as Conservatives. I’ve known what it was like since the day I converted to the Republican party in 1986 back when I was in grade school. I could’ve had a much less rougher time remaining on the left, but I couldn’t reconcile my conscience to remaining one on those matters. I’d have been living a lie.
I thought we, as Conservatives, are supposed to deal in the reality ? The hyperemotionalism on this thread is what we see from liberals. Ignoring the elephant in the room won’t change the fact that it’s still there. I feel like I’m having to stage an intervention in here. You guys are intelligent and I wouldn’t question ANY of you on your Conservative bonafides. We’ve all almost never disagreed (in fact, I can’t cite one thing I’ve ever disagreed with you or Calcowgirl on), it’s what makes it heartbreaking to see these attacks coming forth, all just for bringing up the fact that there’s a serious problem here. We’re on the same side, guys. Let’s not turn the guns on each other. I’m just sorry we can’t discuss this issue rationally. :-(
No longer matters. Guilty or innocent, the smear job worked. Even Newt knew when it was time to go when he realized he didn’t have all the votes. The Congressman has got to realize this and do the right thing. At the very least, to spare his family another round.
We’ll get it back, but Pombo himself won’t.
What is going on? Your presumption is that he did something wrong. He didn't.
You can make ALL of your arguments about Rush Limbaugh too.
Rush Limbaugh isn’t a member of Congress facing likely defeat in a safe Republican district. John Doolittle is.
You are acting like one gigantic dis-loyal agitator driven by inordinant fear of that chump Charlie Brown who only did as well as he did because of the national headlines that took Pombo out and nearly took JTD out just by mere implication and smear... NOTHING MORE!!!
Boy! I'll tell you!! When we conservatives get in a fight with the lying Liberals about ANYTHING... I DO NOT WANT YOU ON MY SIDE!!! You are acting out the epitome of conservative Republicans eating their own at the behest and treachery of Liberal Democrats! What a shame!!!
You're acting as if he's done what Larry Craig is accused of and plead guilty to. Please stop and don't condemn an individual who's not really even been formally accused of ANYTHING!!! That's facilitating his/our adversaries who evidently don't need you help!!!
You're siding with the school yard bullies!!!
I'm truly sorry you feel that way. Remember, I never attacked you like that and I never questioned your loyalty, nor that of any of the other Doolittle defenders, so thanks a lot.
10,000 apologies, sir. I’m so sorry that I actually want the seat to remain in Republican hands after 2008. I didn’t realize we’re supposed to tie ourselves to damaged incumbents and drown with them.
Yeah well you missed the point. You forgot to mention that Rush is heavier and balder too, and he lives in Florida - but none if it is necessary for my comparison. They are both being smeared unfairly. You could just as easily argue that Rush is hurting our cause by being such a visible spokesman having done a) b) and c).
No, I didn’t miss the point because you’re comparing apples to a steak sandwich. This isn’t about Rush Limbaugh, this is about John Doolittle. The point here, for the umpteenth time, is that it is no longer an issue of guilt or innocence, as he could be cleared of any wrongdoing and it still wouldn’t matter (and what if by chance, he is guilty of some of the charges ? Even good people go bad while in power and get corrupted. Look at Duke Cunningham).
You know the double-standards for rodents and the GOP. I’m giving you my expert opinion, borne of being chin deep in politics since I was a kid (well over a quarter-century) and studying it every single day to almost the exclusion of all else (after all, how many other people you know can sit there and discuss practically any state or local district off the top of their head when you’re talking about hundreds and hundreds of individual seats and districts ?). That expert opinion is that we will lose this seat if he is renominated. I know you don’t want to hear it, and I don’t like to have to give the pronouncement (who the hell likes delivering bad news like that when it’s about your own side ?). I’m not going to lie to your face and claim otherwise, because I think all of you are worthy not to be given a snowjob. I’m hoping you don’t want me to lie to you and give you false hope.
The good news is that we can still save this seat. But the defenders will have to decide whether to tell their hero he needs to stand aside for the good of the party, or whether he wants to allow the bad guys to win. That’s what we’re facing. Those are the dynamics. You and I and all the defenders in the thread alone won’t change it, no matter how much yelling and screaming and saying how unfair it is, because it is how it is.
Oh well then you sure are the smart one. You study politics every day. I can't hold a feather to you. Wow! Chin deep and all that. I'm just going to go back to digging ditches and leave the political hangings to "experts" like you.
I’m really appalled by the way you people are acting. You’re not acting like the usual grown-ups that you are, but like a bunch of petulant children that stick their fingers in their ears screaming “nyah-nyah-nyah, I can’t hear you !” Have you all completely lost touch with reality on this subject ?
If you, Amerigomag and Sierra think insulting me will get Doolittle across the finish line, you’re in for a shock. Like I said, pardon me for wanting a Conservative Republican to hold that seat. The only political hangings going on around here are for those folks who are telling you the score. Is this how you treat people on the same damn side ? You’re acting like an angry mob and I’m truly ashamed of all of you. You’re better than that, and I think you all owe both me and Clintonfatigued an apology.
“I think you all owe both me and Clintonfatigued an apology.”
I’m not waiting for one, as the sound of crickets chirping bores me. Elk Grove Dan, Sierra Wasp, and Cowgirl have made their minds up and there’s nothing we can do about it. So let’s focus on other things. After all, when John Doolittle loses, there won’t even be any satisfaction in saying, “I told you so.”

Sure I knew, I also know Im completely against any publicly funded retirement packages for any elected official, Im also against publicly funded retirement for most government workers as well, but elected, absolutely disagree with it.
. . . . . . . . .
If you want to take away my military retirement check (28 years service) and you think you’re man enough to take it from me . . . bring it on, little fella.
No. You owe John Doolittle an apology.
I can not imagine that things would ever deteriorate enough in the United States that I’d ever call a soldier a ‘government worker.’
Therein lies one of the many fundamental differences between the fieldmarshaldj account and its current antagonists:
1) The antagonists want the seat to remain in conservative hands.
2) Conservatives don't care if that candidate is a Democrat or Republican.
3) MarshalDJ's tormentors don't really give a damn about the ebb and flow of the Republican Party.
4) Conservatives strive to withhold personal condemnation of a candidate until he's been proven lacking in the eyes of a prudent man.
Everyone gets it wrong once in a while. Look around at who is orchestrating this attempted take-down. It is the same people that brought us Arnold, smeared McClintock, and ran a very successful propaganda campaign. "Winning" with the likes of those folks has proven to be our biggest disaster.
Frankly, I'm happy to see a backlash now occurring. A backlash directed at a 3 1/2 year Justice Department investigation that has turned into nothing more than a fishing expedition-- they have never even said that Doolittle was "under investigation," let alone a "target" of an investigation. A backlash is also beginning against those who choose to dig Doolittle's grave and toss on some dirt, regardless of the total absence of any evidence of wrong doing. You are seeing some of that backlash here--from freepers. The innuendo and smears on this thread were disgusting--and I saw you jumping right on with it, maybe not for the same reasons but because it supported your end goal of "winning." The dirty-tricksters in the Egland campaign (Schmidt and the ex-Arnie crowd) may get a few surprises as this all plays out.
Are you in his district? Exactly who is "we" and how many constituents have you actually talked to?
