Obama Stops Wearing Flag Pin |
Oct 4 03:06 PM US/Eastern |
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP)-
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said he doesn't wear the American flag lapel pin because it has become a substitute for "true patriotism" since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
Asked about the decision Wednesday in an interview with KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Illinois senator said he stopped doing so shortly after the attacks and instead hoped to show his patriotism by explaining his ideas to citizens.
"The truth is that right after 9-11 I had a pin," Obama said. "Shortly after 9-11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security.
"I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest," he said in the interview. "Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testament to my patriotism."
Obama was campaigning in Iowa Thursday, the second day of a four-day trip to the early voting state.

Whoa, put away the Tazer, Barney. He said “please”.
“Does he wear a hammer & sickle?”
No, hammer and crescent moon.
Well I guess I was the 2nd voice of reason...
Remember the WWJD bracelets? What a bunch of symbolic BS.
I’m not concerned about his not wearing the pin ... I’m worried about the answer he gave to the question.
Bet he wouldn’t throw his smokes away.
I agree wholeheartedly. I actually agree with Obama’s overall point - that wearing a flag on your jacket does absolutely nothing. I actually think he’s a good guy, just very misguided. That’s true of a lot of liberals. There are only a few who I truly despise (like John Edwards).
Oh for crying out loud, stop making it worse for yourself:
Pins Replace 'True Patriotism,' Obama Says -Candidate Says He stopped Wearing Pin Shortly After 9/11
This particular story has been posted two more times in addition to these two. Look, I repost stories all the time. It's not like it makes you a bad person or anything.
So the Mods rightfully changed it.
My original title was:
**OBAMA: Wear a Flag Pin And You Are Not A True Patriot (Paraphrazed, Liberal Style)**
I don’t remember signing up for the redundant thread ping list, but thanks anyway.
My bad.
But still, just don’t click on them anymore.
I posted this with the title
**OBAMA: Wear a Flag Pin And You Are Not A True Patriot (Paraphrazed, Liberal Style)**
Forgetting the rule "don't change the title dummy"...
They're not only symbolic BS, they're also big moneymakers for the producers. I knew this guy who owned a Christian bookstore and made tons of money selling WWJD bracelets and fish stickers and those nail neckalces and all that junk, and he wasn't the least bit a Christian. It was just a business to him. He figured a lot of Christians wanted swag so he might as well sell it to them.
So...anyone know who's making these flag pins? Too late to buy that stock, I suppose.
Sorry to have bummed you out.
I was going to put a disclaimer in that post that said:
Any one that wished to be off of this ping list is.
A one time thing and I did consider some would not have liked it.
Should have posted the disclaimer...
Oh and thanks for not thinking I am a bad person.
That was nice.
:> )
You’re getting pretty shameless with your thread-bumping at this point...
Take off your partisan glasses. Face it, if a Republican candidate had given the same answer, you'd be calling it brilliant...especially if Fred 'I Won't Dance To His Tune' Thompson had said it.
It moves Obama up +5 points in my book, but he still has an overall score of -2,500 points. So don't worry, I won't be voting for him.
Your FR page is great.
Checked it out to see if you were by the Presidio in San Francisco. If so, I’d buy you a beer next time I come down there.
Offer still stands if I am ever in your area and you want to take me up on it.
My guess is that the idiot lost the pin...and he freaked out when a reporter asked him this question...and gave this crazy answer. The explanation given....is one of the most ridiculous statements I’ve heard in 2007.
