MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) - A man who tried to build a nuclear reactor in a shed as a teenager will be assessed by doctors before starting a 90-day jail sentence for stealing smoke detectors.

David Hahn, 31, was sentenced Tuesday in Macomb County Circuit Court on attempted larceny from a building. He was arrested in August after a maintenance worker saw him steal a smoke detector from his Clinton Township apartment complex. Police later found 15 other smoke detectors in his apartment.

Whoops, I read it wrong. STEALING smoke detectors, not setting them off. Ignore my last post...

An Exciter (or Startup Source) can be an Americium 241 source inside a Beryllium tube produces a source of neutrons for initiating a self sustaining nuclear reaction in a nuclear reactor.

These Startup Sources are typically only needed for a fresh reactor core. After a reactor has been at power for a few weeks the irradiated fuel supplies its own neutrons from decaying spent fuel.

"A man who built a nuclear reactor in a shed as a teenager ..."

Fixed it. He really did get a sustained reaction going that was increasing in intensity daily.

I guess that it was technically a sub-critical assembly

Hmmmm....smoke detectors have a radioactive element americium-241... Hope this guy didn't convert to Islam or something?

Is an exciter like a French tickler? What does it do in a nuclear reactor?

A nuclear French tickler?...the mind boggles

My understanding is that it can be used to induce the release of neutrons...

I’m pretty sure this is in part just a hit piece on the Boy Scouts of America. :’)

But anyway, this kid probably has figured out some way to turn something (besides the Americium) from a smoke detector into crystal meth.

Actually I think he is potentially more in the class of Tesla...

You are right in the New Corporate State there is no place for him...

He is a misfit and will suffer the consequence of our inability to protect those among us who just a few Generations ago would be recognized as Genius.

I briefly considered Tesla, but I consider Tesla a true scientist expanding the boundaries of science. Tesla made actual scientific discoveries. Edison (to my knowledge) did not.

This guy is more of a gifted tinkerer as was Edison. Edison took what was known and fiddled with it to make something.

I think this guy may have the potential to be an Edison but unfortunately he has chosen an area of pursuit that is legally off limits outside of universities and government labs.

Private experimentation is strictly verboten.

You know it is hard to say.. I agree this guy has never been provided a place to stand. He first got into trouble as a kid. Wasn’t it the Navy to it’s credit who got him work in the Navy’s nuke program as a Sailor?. That would have been something like Walt Disney in the Marines (yes he was briefly lol) The shoe was a poor fit I suspect.

I hope that Judge has half a brain and finds a decent math or science professor (With the exception of the “Earth Sciences” Hard science and Engineering still have a great many decent professors. (although there is a Math Genius serving life in Prison for killing a three Professor Board who were being A$$Hat elitists IMO. (His response to the life sentence “good I will have more time for Math”.

Sentence him to work as an assistant to a older Science Prof.

Maybe he will not wind up serving life in prison, working for AQ or dead in the gutter as an alcoholic.

Let us hope

W

I doubt that would work out.

Make sure your read the article linked in Post # 3.

The guy was a poor student. Got poor scores in math.

I don't think he can work in a structured environment.

What a waste!
