A Mormon in the Oval Office?
Washington Post ^ | October 4, 2007 | Robert Novak

When Mitt Romney appeared last week (via closed circuit from California) before the Council of Retired Chief Executives meeting in Washington, he faced kindred souls: rich Republicans who had managed big enterprises. Yet the second question from the audience was whether Romney's Mormon faith was hurting his quest for the Republican presidential nomination. He replied that about the only people who brought up his religion were members of the media, an answer that simply is untrue.

Romney is asked about Mormonism wherever he goes. In my travels, I find his religious preference cited everywhere as the source of opposition to his candidacy. His response to the former chief executives that only reporters care about this issue sounded like a politician's tired evasion. Romney was either too obtuse to appreciate his problem or was stalling because he had not determined how to deal with it. Contact with his advisers indicates that it's the latter.

“By their fruits ye shall know them” - that’s why Romney doesn’t get into religious debates with people. He simply tells people to look at him and his family, and judge them, not their religion. My mother was horrified when I joined the LDS church as a teen, but as she watched me marry, (happily for 30 years now), raise five healthy, productive children, and stay in our home for months at a time she dropped those judgments. She never joined the church, we didn’t pressure her to, but she saw that we weren’t a cult and we weren’t the horrible people those who are uninformed want others to think we are. And I’m not promoting Mitt, I’m actually leaning toward Fred Thompson right now.

“Shut up liar!”——————————————————————————————

Your inner self is always reflected in the nastiness of your posts towards fellow freepers.

Romney did not address the press release that he sent to the Huffington Post joining the attack on Rush.

Romney did not address any aspect of his having “thrown Rush under the bus”.

Romney has not acknowledged any thing about what Rush told his audience yesterday about Romney’s attack on him, an attack that even after today’s show is still hanging out there.

Romney has not contacted Rush or apologized, and Rush reinforced that today.

Transcript:
>>>>>Hugh Hewitt: Thanks for joining us. Have you been able to follow this story?

Mitt Romney: Well, you know, you sort of follow it from afar as you’re from place to place. And I think anybody who looks at the story hears what Rush Limbaugh has to say, which of course makes perfect sense. He was referring to this soldier who had doctored up his resume, was a phony soldier. And he was critical of that soldier, and he had every right to be critical of that soldier. And it’s amazing to watch the Democrats turn that into something which clearly he had not intended to make it. And certainly, with his explanation, people should say oh, okay, I understand what you were saying, what you mean. I understand the context. And that’s fine.

HH: Now Governor, when I got to the studio today, I called your staff, because my mailbox was full of e-mails saying why is Governor Romney down on Rush. Did that catch you by surprise that somehow you’d become part of this story?

MR: Gosh, I didn’t know I had become part of the story. That just shows how you’re running around the country and you hear those things. Surely, the comment which he made today, or yesterday, where he said look, you have to understand, I wasn’t referring to all soldiers who oppose the war, I was referring to this soldier as a phony soldier. That makes sense, and you know, you take the man at his word. That’s what he was referring to, and you know, he’s got a long record of supporting our soldiers. There’s no question that this is a man who has been very much on the side of our fighting men and women, but somebody who’s doctored their resume is not somebody who he or anybody else is going to stand up for.

HH: Now this strikes me as an attempt by the MoveOn.org left, allied with some Democratic Senators, to turn attention away from the attack on General Petraeus made a few weeks ago, and an attempt to rebrand themselves as pro-military. How do you assess the effectiveness of trying to escape the effect of the MoveOn.org attack on General Petraeus?

MR: Well, it’s a very different setting. In the case of MoveOn.org, they actually ran an ad, and they said that General Petraeus will betray us, and that is an extraordinary challenge to make for a person who is risking his life for the security and safety of our country, and that’s outrageous. The Democrats wouldn’t distance themselves from it and denounce it, and that was to their dishonor. In this case, Rush’s statement taken out of context appears to say something which he explains he did not mean to say, that he instead was referring to an individual soldier who had doctored his resume. They’re entirely different matters, and you know, the lefties will believe what the lefties want to believe, but the truth of the matter is Rush Limbaugh supports our troops, and supports the rights of Americans to express their views. After all, he does that very thing day in and day out.

Also, frankly, it is about the core intelligence and connection with the truth of a person. Anyone that believes in Mormonism has a screw lose in my opinion (or is so desperately seeking that they will believe anything, which is the real tragedy). Joseph Smith is one of the most ridiculous “prophets” in human history. He married other men’s wives, died in a shootout in a jail, faked translations of documents in egyptian hierogliphics (proven to be faked by a later translation), boasted that he was greater than Jesus Christ (and lied to his congregation about his polygamy) in a sermon, was into the occult, copied Masonic rights for his religion, supplied fake metal plates to a financial backer who wanted proof of the authenticity of his prophecies, ad infinitum. If a man doesn’t check into the truth of their faith, they shouldn’t be President, and if they do and don’t see a problem with Joseph Smith . . . they shouldn’t be President.

Well, I’m glad you’re not voting for Mitt. In my opinion it’s a vote for Hillary to vote for Mitt in this election. I wish the guy wasn’t running because I really don’t want to care about Mormonism one way or another.

I don’t think that is how it would work. I think a lonely, lost person will get a knock at the door. Hi, we are from the Church of Latter Day Saints. Who is that? Well, the U.S. President is a member of our church. Do you mind if we come in. One more stumbling block for a person that needs the truth. Not worth it for me just to have a Republican in the White House.

I made the decision a few months ago to be open about this. You have huge numbers of people that will do Mitt in quietly, private conversations, in churches, families, small groups. It’s not going to be pretty and people not in these circles really need to listen to guys like me that are just telling it the way it is. Too many will not vote for Romney. The election will go to Hillary if he is the nominee. You are supporting Hillary when you support Romney. Romney is the only Republican candidate other than Ron Paul that is a guaranteed loser in the general election.

It’s about not promoting a cult.

As you know, 'cult' is in the eye of the beholder. I'm quite sure there are some who would consider your faith a cult. (By the way, you carefully avoided revealing what your own faith is.) Perhaps if you would define the word 'cult' as you see it, your comment would make more sense. But cult as I term it (a religion that requires the worship of a man) doesn't classify Mormons as a cult.

Would you vote for a Scientologist? A Moonie? Why not?

Yes, if they held the appropriate positions on issues and had the background in politics to show their words and actions are the same. I'm not aware of any Scientologists or Moonie's running for President, so I can't comment on any specific person.

Just so you know, Mitt is not my top pick for a candidate - but it is because his political background does not match the conservative words he is now using. It has nothing to do with his Mormonism.

You are supporting Hillary when you support Romney.

You can save your keystrokes. That silly argument has been worn out on the CA election threads. Exhibit A as to how we got Gov. Arnold. No thank you.

No, you did not say those exact words. You said:

I don't understand why pentagrams on your underwear would be offensive to you. You have them on in plain sight on your Temple (even if they aren't the masoic symbols that are stitched on your navel, and nipples.

It's like saying "Now, I would never say that Mormons are Satanists, but they use this satanic symbol elsewhere." In this statement, I can plausibly claim that I did not say that Mormons are Satanists but the meaning of the statement is crystal clear. Mormons = Satanists. You are a very skilled liar after a lifetime of lies. They fall off of your lips with such ease. You don't actually have to tell the lie in order to pass it along do you? No, you just leave the impression with the words you use that there would be nothing wrong with pentagrams on our underwear because, according to you, there are pentagrams everywhere in the LDS church. Thus, the words say one thing, but the meaning of the statement is very clear.

It's a time tested tactic. Very clever, really. An utterly despicable, deceitful, profane and underhanded tactic, but clever. All in all, par for your posts.

I think a lonely, lost person will get a knock at the door.

That lonely lost person will be open to whoever knocks on the door. How many people do you know who have changed religions four, five times or more in their lives? There is a deeper problem at work.

Great news Mitt fans! Not only does Romney lead in several early primary states, but the national race is getting closer as well! Woo hoo! Practically a dead heat with the margin of error.

Poll Watch: Rasmussen Daily Tracker (10/4)Poll

Thompson - 22%
Giuliani - 20%
Romney - 17%
McCain - 11%
Huckabee - 5%

Daily tracking results are from survey interviews conducted over four days ending last night. Each update includes approximately 600-650 Likely Republican Primary Voters. Margin of sampling error for each is +/- 4

I'm sure there are people who think those who believe in whatever your faith is have a screw loose.

I will ask again. . .what is your faith? Baptist, Methodist, ELCA, Jehovah's Witness? If you are going to make someone else's faith an issue, you shouldn't be afraid to reveal what yours is.

Slippin' and a-slidin', flippin' and a-floppin'.....

Just keep repeating this over and over and maybe the bigots will change their reason for not supporting one of the best candidates to your reason.

(the Mormon church hasn’t grown in a long time, maybe two decades)

Could you serve a bit of proof with this laughable statement.
