A Mormon in the Oval Office?
Washington Post ^ | October 4, 2007 | Robert Novak

Posted on 10/04/2007 9:40:06 AM PDT by greyfoxx39

When Mitt Romney appeared last week (via closed circuit from California) before the Council of Retired Chief Executives meeting in Washington, he faced kindred souls: rich Republicans who had managed big enterprises. Yet the second question from the audience was whether Romney's Mormon faith was hurting his quest for the Republican presidential nomination. He replied that about the only people who brought up his religion were members of the media, an answer that simply is untrue.

Romney is asked about Mormonism wherever he goes. In my travels, I find his religious preference cited everywhere as the source of opposition to his candidacy. His response to the former chief executives that only reporters care about this issue sounded like a politician's tired evasion. Romney was either too obtuse to appreciate his problem or was stalling because he had not determined how to deal with it. Contact with his advisers indicates that it's the latter.

Brillaint!... Sadly, it will either go right over the Mittiacs’ heads or they will choose to ignore it.

So you are a Mormon trying to claim similarity to Judaism and Catholicism? Not similar. Judaism and Catholicism are both rooted in God, originating in God’s word. Mormonism is rooted in Joseph Smith, a con man, who pretended to find metal plates (that mysteriously disappeared) that he deciphered in a hat using magic glasses, who falsely pretended to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics that when discovered later and deciphered by a scholar were plainly a fraudulent and false translation by Joseph Smith, he was known in his community to tell tall tales and dabble in the occult, he copied Masonic rights for his “religion” and married other men’s wives. It’s a cult. Romney will never get my vote and will not get the vote of anyone that understands what Mormonism is.

He's also a religious bigot:

I didn’t say that at all about evangelical Christians. That was someone else. I just took issue with your comment about Reagan because I knew he was a Christian and all Christians in my view should be evangelical.

“Wonder why all the flap over Mitt’s mormonism but nary a word about Harry Reid’s.”

Without some sort of coup or some attack that neutralizes everyone
ahead of Harry in the line of succession...Harry won’t have a prayer of
ever being President.

On the other hand, Mitt does have a shot. At least of ending up on
the Pres/VP ticket.

But I still was amazed at the level of hostility to electing ANY
Mormon to the Presidency as evidenced by some of the call-ins
on the great Christian talk-radio in LA.

I’m as much of a skeptic about Mormonism being anything approaching
“orthodox” Christianity.

But even if Romney is in that camp...I sure trust him MUCH more than
any steath Muslim, Islamic-sympathizer or socialist that the Democrats
are “praying” to foist off on the American people.

What just happened there, why was that post pulled?

You know why. Pretty funny though.

And frankly he could make a good president for the country. BUT, he could never get elected if up against the current democrat criminal enterprise party because of his religious affiliation which will be exploited to suppress a significant enough percentage of conservative Christian voters. Better to nominate someone else to run against the clinton goons and their sycophantic leftist media adorers.

I have no idea, give me a hint, and I am not trying to be funny.

Senate and Presidency is sort of the social equivalent of the difference between a bicycle and a freight train. A Senator has almost no effect on the public. That’s why there is this issue at the Presidential level for Romney as a Mormon while there are several Mormon Senators and Congressmen with little issue. The Mormon Senators and Congressmen are also in Western states which is the least religious section of the country.

From a Christian perspective, the hope is that since the Mormons turn on a dime from former doctrine — polygamy was irrevocable doctrine until it wasn’t, no black priests was clear in Mormon scripture until it wasn’t anymore in 1978 — with any luck in a hundred years the Mormon’s will become Christian or the church will lose what little energy it has left and just be like the Masons are now, a sort of shell with guys wearing silly hats or whatever Masons do with a lot of real estate slowly being sold off. The time is wrong for a Mormon president now though. It will just hand the election to Hillary in my opinion to nominate Romney.

I’m talking about the election, not the primaries. Read my post again.

Yeah, but what stage are we at again? Of course, there will be some divisions at this stage.

Secondly, these divisions are "good" in the sense that they send a longer-term message:

(a) The Republican base won't support, say, a pro-abortion Republican candidate. If the rest of the Republicans insist on putting forth such a candidate, well, at least they can't say in November, "Why didn't you tell us you'd stay home or vote for a third party?" Simply put: Strong, adverse reactions to certain candidates should send a longer-term signal (beyond the primaries)

(b) This long-term signal needs to be beamed even beyond the general election; elsewise, the party is sunk long-term. A party that plans on ignoring its base long-term is pure & simple, "sunk." The Big Tent can't become a circus.

I've read Hugh Hewitt's book. I've thought about it carefully.

I think his Mormon religion is a HUGE obstacle to his election in November, 2008, and I'd like to find that out now, rather than after the convention.

There are no pentagrams on our garments. Really.

I'm still trying to determine whether Mitt is the best candidate, I can't stand Harry Reid, and long ago was disappointed by Orrin Hatch.

I'm also disappointed that porno mags and video (on the TV,ten feet away from the Book of Mormon in the nightstand drawer) are available in Marriott hotels.

I thought that the SLC Olympics was tacky in many ways and have a lot of empathy for non-LDS who in Utah are de facto diluted by the "predominant culture -- I probably wouldn't fit in as a citizen of Utah.

And I have an automatic skepticism concerning rich, famous, and/or "powerful" Mormons.

Really, we don't all vote and walk around as a mindless block. I only have a problem with people telling me that I'm too dumb to know what I believe. Please, no invitation for a flame-war here.

But an APOLOGY from me to to you, to Elsie, and to others here re: the bad example I have been, flawed critter/work-in-progress that I am. I need to keep in mind that Satan is the "father of contention."

I don’t know for sure but I assume it violates FR policy because it is openly offensive to Mormons to display or discuss Mormon garments.

I think you need to ask a few of the Mormon Freepers how they feel about posting the garments.

If you have not been made aware of these things here, then you are being slightly naive.

For the last time, Romney’s Mormonism doesn’t bother me, his liberalism does.

Tracer well said and I agree. It hurts to see people spout untruths about something we believe (or know) but at the same time realize we can’t fight back because that’s exactly what the father of all lies wants from us. We are all works in progress, most of us (LDS) don’t walk in lockstep, and like you, I haven’t made a decision on who I’ll vote for yet. I do know, however, that I will vote “anyone but Hillary” when election time comes around.

It can’t be that, they are clothing. Banning mentions or photos of clothing from various religions would be extraordinarily sweeping and restricting.

I notice you joined FR about 4 months ago. Are your trying to be an agent provocateur?

Senate and Presidency is sort of the social equivalent of the difference between a bicycle and a freight train. A Senator has almost no effect on the public. That’s why there is this issue at the Presidential level for Romney as a Mormon while there are several Mormon Senators and Congressmen with little issue. LOL. Where do you come up with this stuff, suck it out of your thumb?

The time is wrong for a Mormon president now though. It will just hand the election to Hillary in my opinion to nominate Romney.

You are entitled to your opinion, just not your own facts. Although not my first choice, I have no problem with Romney being President. He is an accomplished executive, who has been successful in both public service and the private sector. I have no doubt that he could beat Hillary, despite the Dems and others trying to attack him thru his religion. Most of America has moved beyond that kind of bigoted nonsense.
