Bishop: No Communion for Giuliani
AP via SFGate ^ | 10/3/7

Posted on 10/03/2007 1:19:30 PM PDT by SmithL

Saint Louis (AP) -- Roman Catholic Archbishop Raymond Burke, who made headlines last presidential season by saying he'd refuse Holy Communion to John Kerry, has his eye on Rudy Giuliani this year. Giuliani's response: "Archbishops have a right to their opinion."

Burke, the Archbishop of St. Louis, was asked by The St. Louis Post-Dispatch if he would deny Communion to Giuliani if the former New York mayor approached him for the sacrament.

"If the question is about a Catholic who is publicly espousing positions contrary to the moral law, and I know that person knows it, yes I would," the paper quoted the archbishop as responding.

Burke has said of Giuliani: "I can't imagine that as a Catholic he doesn't know that his stance on the protection of human life is wrong. If someone is publicly sinning, they should not approach to receive Holy Communion."

Asked about it Wednesday while campaigning in New Hampshire, Giuliani said:

"Archbishops have a right to their opinion, you know. There's freedom of religion in this country. There's no established religion, and archbishops have a right to their opinion. Everybody has a right to their opinion."

Burke says that anyone administering Communion is morally obligated to deny it to Catholic politicians who support an abortion-rights position contrary to church teaching.

He is expected to push the nation's bishops to take that stance in a document on political responsibility they will issue to Catholics before the 2008 election.

"The more you become involved in America’s domestic politics, the less relevant you become to your American parishioners."

Where were you back in the '70's when lefty loon priests ran and were elected to Congress? Too young to remember that?

"Everybody has a right to their opinion.""

Oh, it's a LOT more than "opinion", it's the rule of the church.

Displaying such attitude of disregard is part proof why Giuliani is such a fake.

“Attention Catholic Church:’

What the hell do you know about it? Or for that matter, anything?

If you were pro-abort, would you expect to go to Communion?

Repeated references to the archbishop’s position as “opinion” are attempts to diminish it.

That is so true. It's Rudy's only defence.

I haven't laughed so hard this week until I saw your screenname. Don't tell me I'm out of the loop and haven't heard Weird Al's new cover of an old Iron Maiden song.

Rudy has left his faith, that’s pretty clear. If he were intellectually honest he’s start attending services as an Episcopalian or Unitarian.

The National Socialists in Italy and Germany would certainly have agreed with your point of view.

Precisely.

The Church follows our Lord and Master, Jesus Christ. Jesus said “I am THE WAY, THE TRUTH and THE LIFE.”

What part of that don’t you understand, and why would we care about income tax exclusions?

If you want to promote Giuliani, go ahead. Just don’t tell an Archbishop with a doctoral degree in Sacred Theology what he should do. He answers to only one Boss and that Boss is not on this earth. The souls of millions of Catholics are at stake by this pol’s example/scandal and this Archbishop takes that seriously. He is sending a powerful message to Giuliani; it may save his soul if he listens.

That quote reminds me of another. I bet Pope Pius XII wished he had warned his parishioners about this guy sooner:

“State authority must provide for peace and order, and peace and order in turn must conversely make possible the existence of state authority. Within these two poles all life must now revolve...Ideas of ‘freedom,’ mostly of a misunderstood nature, inject themselves into the state conceptions of these circles”.

I wish all bishops would do the same when it comes to politicians supporting abortion. Archbishop Raymond Burke walks the walk.

P.S. Remember when Rudy’s microphone was struck by lightning? Coincidence?

Thank you for the ping. I am not a Catholic, thus what I think about denying Communion to a liberal politician is not material.

The overwhelming majority of Catholics I know are liberal minded and vote for liberals. I think that to be Catholic even in name only is given higher respect than any non-Catholic for these overwhelming majority. They are all politically aware and to be a Catholic is a world filled with ‘grace’ on the ‘sin’ factor.

I liken this to those of another high religious affiliation that stood by their man/woman the Clintons all through their perverseness of the 90’s reign. These that stood with the Clintons are still with them today no matter how far left the Clintons are.

I think that many people have in their minds that popularity and most especially to be representative of their religious persuasion is a sign to them personally, from God selecting out an individual to fulfill their own religious doctrine.

America’s domestic politics

the salvation of souls

In the case of the wanton mass slaughter of the innocent, the two are hardly mutually exclusive.

Those who cheer now are those who have cursed Jesse Jackson, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, and others for attempting to influence domestic policies from a church pulpit

Incorrect. They're not being cursed for attempting to influence domestic policies from any given location. They're being cursed for being lying Stalinists. Where they lie from is pretty much irrelevant.
