The Politico has one of the most interesting articles up about Fred Thompson published in quite a while. Most political observers focus on the polls, who raises what (plead guilty); in short, the details, but the Politicos Roger Simon takes a closer look at how Fred Thompson handles himself and what kind of person he is and what kind of campaign he has.
When Roger asked Thompson whether the considers himself to be an 11th Commandment man (never speak ill of a fellow Republican), the former senator answered that hes more of a 12 Commandment man. The 12th Commandment, according to Thompson: Dont speak ill of them until they speak ill of me. And then really speak ill of them.
As Roger points out, until now, Thompson has presented himself as a folksy, good humoured guy, who doesnt care all that much about what people say about him. That may, however, change. Soon.
In fact, he may already have changed his approach: in a recent speech he told his fellow Republicans that they have to stay true to their principles. When Roger asked him whether he was was refering to Rudy Giuliani, Thompson made a face of mock horror and laughed.
When Roger asked a follow-up question, how it could be that Giuliani - who is pro-choice, pro-gun control and pro-gay rights - leads in the national polls among (likely) Republican voters, Thompson answered: I dont know that people know his positions. That hasnt really been part of the discussion up to now, far as I can tell. It seems that a lot of candidates have been campaigning for a long time and voters dont know a lot of things about a lot of them.
And it seems to me that Thompson will not let his fellow Republican candidates get away with that much longer.
He further believes, he told Roger, that the Republican candidates dont have to try and find the Reagan Democrats. According to Thompson, these Democrats have not gone anywhere. Instead, its the Republican Party as a whole that has moved. He explained that he was referring to big spending and ethical lapses which have a dampening effect on our own.
When asked about the possibilities of a Republican victory in 08, Thompson explained that he believes that - although the sentiment is pro-Democrats at this point in time - theres still time to change the tide; he believes that if he campaigns hard, hell be able to convince enough Independents that hes the best person to lead the country for the coming four years.
Combine Thompsons threatening words with the criticism and threats coming from the self-proclaimed leaders of the Christian conservatives in America, and Giuliani may be in some serious trouble. He hasnt been attacked all that much yet - except for Mitt Romney, who has most certainly gone after Giuliani - but that has changed and will most likely continue to change. Giulianis opponents realize that if they dont attack him - truly attack him - he may very well take the nomination. Not only does that mean that they might as well give up, it also means that their party will be lead by someone who disagrees with the partys base about the issues it once cared most about.
There are two obvious ways to respond to this, so I'll do both.
First, the only thing that qualifies anyone for the presidency (after they meet the constitutional requirements for holding the office) is winning a presidential election.
Second, what did Abe Lincoln ever do that qualified him for the presidency? Before being elected President, Abe Lincoln had been a one-term Congressman (eight years earlier), had never held any other significant office, and had simply worked as a small town lawyer.
Sometimes you just have to go with the best person available at the time.
Same as or more than anyone else, difference is Fred is electable, Hunter is not and you Hunter backers know it. Deny it if you will, image is everything in this day of mass media and the MSM will not give Hunter a chance and he has not showed the foresight to establish an internet campaign and other ways to circumvent the MSM. Fred is out there and has name and face recognition.
Hunter is my first choice and I send him money for now, but I am a realist as well and unless Hunter pulls a miracle I will vote Fred.
Duncan who?
What executive experience did Abraham Lincoln have before being elected? We don’t need a manager, we need a leader, and that’s FRED THOMPSON!! Dictatorships, socialist & communist countries seek a central planner, we should seek a man that will do what is right, and think of first principles (the Founding Fathers & Federalism) when making a decision. That man is FRED THOMPSON!!
I was awarded top Veterans Employment Rep & Rising Star at the Workforce Center two times for my work with veterans, yet I don’t consider myself presidential material, so what’s your point? Maybe “president” Thompson will see the merits of Rep. Hunter and appoint him SecDef, Sec of Homeland Security or VA or FEMA director. I don’t know, but it doesn’t seem like Mr. Hunter is catching on with the potential voters, for whatever reason...
I’m responding to you calling him backbench. His position was not backbench.

What has Fred Thompson ever led but a gifted life as an actor, a lobbyist and a so-so Senator? All attained by smoke, mirrors, red pick up trucks, and a mediocre imitation of a folksy ole boy.
We have been so blessed to have Duncan Hunter, a seasoned veteran of both the military and the Congress; a proven Conservative man of high principles, unequalled common sense, and a calm but determined demeanor running for the presidency!
Our enemies, both foreign and domestic, fear him, and that is good enough for me.
You don’t have to explain yourself to her.
Unless you are in the leadership, you are considered a back-bencher (see Ron Paul, Denis Kucinich, Barack Hussein Obama, etc..) It is not a slur, but a description of his rank & file status in the congress. Senator Fred Thompson was the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman, which has jurisdiction over Federal procurement policy.

All men of 6’5” are imposing by height, let alone practiced charm, to inspire leadership to men short either of inches, intellectual acumen, or of courage. And he is an actor, lest we forget, running for the most important role of a lifetime.
That he surrounds himself with Rockefeller Republicans like Howard Baker, and the same CFR members now populating the Bush Administration guarantees nothing else but more of the same - certainly NOT Conservatism.
Yep, he talks, but he hasn’t “done”.
The CEWI stands for combat electronic warfare and intelligence, if you were wondering. I was a “plank holder” (Navy term, actually) at both the 312th and 102d M.I. Battalions, since I was there at the conception of both.
Thank you for your service to our country. :)

Same old drivel you guys always dish out. The mindless lemmings will do what the media and the MSM tell them to do. Not a backbone among them!
Hunter is your first choice, BUT.... Hunter is my only choice, and I will vote for him in the primaries and pray that enough other Conservatives stick with him to put him over the top. The other leaders at least have accomplishments to fall back on. I will not vote for someone without them.
To your question - ABSOLUTELY. It would do you well to study what has been known to be going on for nearly two centuries. The reason we are in the mess we are in today is that too many people either don’t want to be bothered with the truth, or can’t handle it. Satan happily thrives because people don’t believe he exists.
