Threat Matrix Highlight

Nuclear proliferation is an advancing threat. Fifteen years ago, there were three undeclared nuclear weapons states -- Israel, India and Pakistan -- and five declared -- the United States, Russia, Britain, France and China. Today Iran is on track to become the 10th nation with nuclear capabilities.

Lakeland man arrested in cyber stalking threat
Last Update: 10/04 9:28 am

“Lakeland Man Arrested for Cyber Stalking and Manufacturing Destructive Devices”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Polk County Sheriff’s detectives arrested a Lakeland man Wednesday evening, October 3, 2007, for aggravated cyber stalking after investigation revealed he made threatening statements via email, and after his arrest they discovered hundreds of homemade destructive devices in his home.

According to the affidavit, Timothy Joseph Vaughn, DOB 9/12/68, of 1045 Hallam Drive of Lakeland, received an email from www.classmates.com advertising an upcoming reunion for the Lakeland High School class of 1985, of which he is a member.

Vaughn responded to the email via his personal email account with statements that he was going to “make Virginia Tech look like a birthday party,” a reference to the April 2007 shooting that occurred at Virginia Tech where 33 people were killed. Detectives responded to Vaughn’s residence to place him under arrest.

Post-Miranda, Vaughn admitted to sending the email and stated that he hated all of his classmates and just wanted to be left alone.

As detectives were escorting Vaughn out of his home, one of them noticed what appeared to be an M-80 destructive device.

A further search of the home revealed 178 homemade M-80 and M-100 destructive devices, and approximately 700 additional various devices under construction. The State Fire Marshal, the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms), and the Tampa Bay regional bomb squad assisted in the collection of the evidence.”
