FBI investigating double commuter train derailment in Chicago

CHICAGO (AP) — Federal officials are investigating two rush-hour commuter train derailments on separate tracks near the same station, a week after 30 railroad spikes were found missing from tracks on the same line.

The cars remained upright after Tuesday’s derailment and no injuries were reported, officials said.

The FBI and Joint Terrorism Task Force are looking into the incidents, Metra spokeswoman Judy Pardonnet said.

“It’s rare to have two derailments at the same location,” Pardonnet said.

Both trains were removed by early Wednesday and normal service was restored for the morning rush.

The first train derailed around 5 p.m. Tuesday. About 257 passengers were on the first train and they transferred to another train, Pardonnet said.

The second train, carrying about 200 passengers, derailed around 6:30 p.m. as it tried to go around the first train, Pardonnet said.

Before Tuesday’s derailments, the FBI said it would offer a reward of as much as $50,000 for information into last week’s missing spikes, which are used to hold down metal plates that bind the rails to wooden ties.

Employees of the Metra suburban rail system discovered the damage on Sept. 24.

The Metra commuter rail system serves Chicago’s suburbs and carries trains from northern Indiana’s South Shore Line.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Capitol Police reported four fires in Senate office buildings Wednesday. All were extinguished by midafternoon, but an investigation continued.

“They are suspicious in nature,” said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider.

She said two fires in the Dirksen Senate Office Building and one in the Hart building next door were reported in women’s bathrooms and were extinguished between 10:45 a.m. EDT and 12:30 p.m. A fourth, also in Dirksen, was reported later and extinguished by mid-afternoon, Schneider said.

Police were still investigating.

Egypt hires lawyer for USF student facing explosives charges

TAMPA, Florida — Egypt's government may be hiring a prominent Tampa lawyer to represent an Egyptian college student facing explosives charges.

John Fitzgibbons is best known as the attorney who kept teacher Debra LaFave out of prison after she had sex with a middle-school student. He says he is in talks with the Egyptian embassy in Washington and likely will be hired to represent suspended University of South Florida student Ahmed Mohamed.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “The mysterious disappearance of a 23-year-old Toronto woman in Somalia has Canadian officials looking for her, and her boyfriend worried she’s being punished for their relationship.

Najah Jama has not been heard from since August when she called her boyfriend at the Toronto apartment they share, telling him she was jailed for refusing to marry a local Somali. Jama had left Toronto with her mother in March for a six-month vacation in northern Somalia. It was the first time she had ever visited her mother’s homeland.

The couple stayed in touch during her vacation, but in July a distraught Jama called her boyfriend, Seifu Getahun, to say she had been taken into custody. She said her mother had asked her to marry a Muslim man from her hometown and became upset and called police when Jama insisted she wanted to wed Getahun, a Canadian of Ethiopian Christian heritage. Ethiopia and Somalia have a long history of war, most recently exacerbated by the presence of Ethiopian troops in Mogadishu, the country’s anarchic capital.

None of Jama’s relatives could be reached for comment.”

Iraqi interior ministry said a parked car detonated in the downtown neighborhood of Karrada and struck a multi-vehicle Polish convoy, sport utility vehicles with Polish flags on the side.

General Edward Pietrzyk, is at the U.S. military hospital in Baghdad in stable condition. Several private security guards were wounded and rushed to hospitals also. The vehicles were “burned down,” the chief of mission said. Poland has had a strong presence in the U.S.-led coalition, and its military commands the Multi-National Division-Central South region.”

“Blackwater copter rescues Polish ambassador”

The diplomatic convoy was hit by three bombs and then attackers opened fire in the Shiite-controlled Karradah district. Polish guards returned fire as the injured ambassador, Gen. Edward Pietrzyk, was pulled from his burning vehicle. At least 10 people, including four Polish security agents, were wounded.

U.S. Embassy officials dispatched Blackwater helicopters to evacuate the ambassador and others. Blackwater was not involved in protecting the Polish convoy.

Pietrzyk, who was commander of ground forces in Poland before taking the ambassador post in April, suffered minor burns over 20 percent of his body, including his head and right arm and leg, said Polish Charge d’Affaires Waldemar Figaj.

“They were waiting for us,” Figaj told The Associated Press as he gave details of the attack.”
