Broader concealed gun law is sought

The National Rifle Association and other gun advocates Friday urged state lawmakers to force Nebraska towns and cities to allow concealed handguns.

The 2006 state law permitting licensed Nebraskans to carry concealed handguns allows cities and towns to adopt their own ordinances regulating those weapons. At least 16 Nebraska cities and towns ban concealed weapons.

Christensen would like to establish a uniform requirement for where guns can be legally stored out of sight in a vehicle, such as in the glove compartment, trunk or other locked area.

Otherwise, he said, travelers with concealed weapons permits could be required to constantly move their guns to comply with different legal requirements in urban areas or in communities along Interstate 80.

The Legislature's Judiciary Committee conducted a hearing Friday at the State Capitol on conflicting gun regulations across the state and how they were affected by the 2006 concealed weapons law.

Jordan Austin, a lobbyist for the NRA, argued for statewide "pre-emption" of all local firearms ordinances so that the Legislature would be solely responsible for the regulation of firearms and ammunition.

He said lawmakers did not intend for cities to supersede the 2006 law with their own regulations. The new law says "a permit to carry a concealed handgun is valid throughout the state."

Margaret Sheldon, a city administrator in Hemingford, Neb., is a certified NRA pistol instructor and is training to be a concealed handgun instructor.

She competes in cowboy action shooting, a form of competitive shooting that features guns and costumes from the Old West.

She said she often carries a gun.

"I do carry a gun, and I want it to be legal,"

"I do carry a gun, and I want it to be legal,"

Carrying a gun is constitutionally legal.

Anyone that claims it is not, or agrees with the concept that it is not, -- is ignoring one of our most basic 'Laws of the Land'.

No doubt the NRA bashers will be here shortly, repeating what they read in the GOA fund-raising letters.

If only this were about New Jersey or New York, states where you need permission to OWN a handgun. Forget about trying to get a concealed weapons permit.

I just came from the last BL thread and this bickering amonst ourselves is crazy. theres no sense in baiting somebody about NRA-GOA when the plain fact of the matter is that a whole new law was recently passed, which supposedly allowed nebraskans to exercise a GOD given right, only to find out that it wasnt thoroughly written and that some tyranical hacks end ran the damn thing.

If we fall prey to 'divide & conquer' tactics, instead of focusing on the removal of infringemnts, alot of effort will be wasted, and alot more citizens will die in the meantime. my NRA/GOA .02...

Firearms laws need to be consistent within the boundary of a state. It is ridiculous to expect a person traveling inside a state to acquire and understand a varying set of laws enacted by every city and county in the path of travel. The ideal condition would be a Vermont style carry in every state in the union. Complete respect for the 2nd Amendment as an integral part of the supreme law of the land. We're going to have to eat the elephant one bite at a time.

Because of the 2nd Amendment, conceal carry laws aren’t needed. We should assume that anyone (except those who have been convicted of violent crimes) have the right to own and carry a gun wherever he or she wants to carry it, except for a few exceptions (airplanes). The majority of laws tell us what we are not allowed to do, but conceal carry laws are the few that tell us what we may do.

I have a bumper sticker that says, “Guns don’t kill people; abortion clinics kill people.”

Very true.

If ever I got caught with a concealed weapon in the states of NY and NJ, it means that I can no longer legally own a firearm in this country again.

Have you contacted any legislators in those states and reminded them that the gun control law violates the 2nd Amendment?

Check out Jack Scott and Don Perata in California. Rabid anti-gun legislators. They carry water for the Violence Policy Center and Brady bunch in addition to their own attitudes. Feinstein's federal assault weapon ban has fortunately passed the sunset date. I'm sure there are similar kooks in other state legislatures around the country. Since relocating to Idaho, I don't have much reason to complain to my reps about state policies. Pinging on the House and Senate reps is a constant effort.

They are well aware that they are violating their oaths to protect and defend the 2nd.

Playing the game with them, - that they are just misinformed, is a type of appeasement.

-- It's time, -- in the Claire Wolf sense, to do a bit moe than 'remind them' that gun control 'laws' violate the 2nd Amendment.
