Christian Conservatives Consider Third-Party Effort
New York Times ^

Posted on 09/30/2007 5:23:05 PM PDT by jonyyeh

Alarmed at the chance that the Republican party might pick Rudolph Giuliani as its presidential nominee despite his support for abortion rights, a coalition of influential Christian conservatives is threatening to back a third-party candidate in an attempt to stop him.

The group making the threat, which came together Saturday in Salt Lake City during a break-away gathering during a meeting of the secretive Council for National Policy, includes Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, who is perhaps the most influential of the group, as well as Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, the direct mail pioneer Richard Viguerie and dozens of other politically-oriented conservative Christians, participants said. Almost everyone present expressed support for a written resolution that “if the Republican Party nominates a pro-abortion candidate we will consider running a third party candidate.”

The participants spoke on condition of anonymity because the both the Council for National Policy and the smaller meeting were secret, but they said members of the intend to publicize its resolution. These participants said the group chose the qualified term “consider” because they have not yet identified an alternative third party candidate, but the group was largely united in its plans to bolt the party if Mr. Giuliani became the candidate.

A revolt of Christian conservative leaders could be a significant setback to the Giuliani campaign because white evangelical Protestants make up a major portion of Republican primary voters. But the threat is risky for the credibility of the Christian conservative movement as well. Some of its usual grass-roots supporters could still choose to support even a pro-choice Republican like Mr. Giuliani, either because they dislike the Democratic nominee even more or because they are worried about war, terrorism and other issues.

What makes you think I missed the point? I think that’s perfectly appropriate.

Why do we then whine if they won’t stick their necks out and do the conservative thing, if we ourselves won’t risk a little and vote on principle rather than for “political strategy?”

That was very profound.

You do realize that the early Christians lived in a perverted culture and were ruled by pagans, right?

Maybe this group conservatives could put their country ahead of their personal views and back the Republican candidate rather than hand the election over to the socialists.

Amen! I prefer somebody else, but if the choice is between Rudy and Hillary (or any Dim for that matter), no doubt I would choose Rudy!

Forget Joel Osteen, he is a heretic and false teacher.

I would have to agree.

By the way, I know this is definitely a long shot, but if you had to pick between Ron Paul and any an Democrat, who would you pick? Unfortunately, both Paul and the Democrats agree on Foreign Policy. However, would you still pick Paul because, like many Libertarians, he would support “smaller government”?

> ...I will not participate in any effort that will result in a peeling of votes away from the flawed but ELECTABLE Republicans!...

> Those who think that by committing the sin of omission, they are somehow self-righteous are just flat out wrong. In the real world of politics, not voting for the lessor of two evils is choosing the greater evil. Period.

Just a word of caution, given your BIG BOLD letters and naming of sins, above. If you're boosting Rudy, you might want to look here:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1823139/posts

and be aware that a lot of broken-glass Republicans have been picking the shards out of their knees, standing up, and disavowing Giuliani and his unacceptable liberal beliefs.

Just sayin', FR is maybe not where you want to pick a fight on that topic...

I'd thought the advice was it was going to be easier on Israel if they dumped the Egyptians (with whom they had a treaty) and made a deal with the Babylonians (who had a stronger army quite able to march overland across one of the world's worst deserts and arrive refreshed and ready to stomp people).

The point being that no one was listening to Jeramiah ~ I think we're all agreed on that. But no matter how we evaluate Jeramiah, Dobson doesn't fit the pattern. He's more like that guy who wanted Moses to take them all back to Egypt.

I’d pick Ron Paul over any demonrat, even though I disagree strongly with his isolationist views.

Ask those in Kalifornia what they think of their liberal Republican Governor. A liberal Republican is probably worse than a democrat because, (1)you never know where they stand, (2)you can never count on them for support, and (3) they try so hard to be “politically correct” or to outdo the democrat in social programs that they end up doing more damage than a democrat would have done due to not having any party to fight them.

I went to that site, but I didn’t see anything that would make me believe that Conservative Christians were running there by the droves. If I am wrong please point me in the right direction.

First off I think third party efforts only benefit groups by pushing the agenda or debate more toward their POV. Otherwise there is no benefit except screwing up the chances for voting for a R or D depending on which they are oriented toward.

If this article is true and some Christians are doing this I hope this is the only reason and that they vote with the R when the day comes. However there is nothing wrong with giving the frontrunner a slap on the hand and a reminder not to stray too far from the ranch or atleast know they will have a fight on their hands once they are in office. People need to support the R's in their field that most align with their ideals and fight hard for them to get the nomination instead of putting their fruitless efforts elsewhere.

I do not support third party efforts. They do not go anywhere and are a waste of people's time and energy. I have seen MANY go down this path Democrat and Republican to exhaustion and to no benefit only to find their opposing party in office for many years and many times their own life and ideals in shambles.

I’m a Texan.

Not just a Texan, a native Texan. (We are becoming an endangered species, especially in the big urban areas.)

But I must admit, we can produce some real loons. (Perot, Paul, Rather, Moyers)

Maybe its all the weird weather patterns. ;^)
