Alarmed at the chance that the Republican party might pick Rudolph Giuliani as its presidential nominee despite his support for abortion rights, a coalition of influential Christian conservatives is threatening to back a third-party candidate in an attempt to stop him.
The group making the threat, which came together Saturday in Salt Lake City during a break-away gathering during a meeting of the secretive Council for National Policy, includes Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, who is perhaps the most influential of the group, as well as Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, the direct mail pioneer Richard Viguerie and dozens of other politically-oriented conservative Christians, participants said. Almost everyone present expressed support for a written resolution that if the Republican Party nominates a pro-abortion candidate we will consider running a third party candidate.
The participants spoke on condition of anonymity because the both the Council for National Policy and the smaller meeting were secret, but they said members of the intend to publicize its resolution. These participants said the group chose the qualified term consider because they have not yet identified an alternative third party candidate, but the group was largely united in its plans to bolt the party if Mr. Giuliani became the candidate.
A revolt of Christian conservative leaders could be a significant setback to the Giuliani campaign because white evangelical Protestants make up a major portion of Republican primary voters. But the threat is risky for the credibility of the Christian conservative movement as well. Some of its usual grass-roots supporters could still choose to support even a pro-choice Republican like Mr. Giuliani, either because they dislike the Democratic nominee even more or because they are worried about war, terrorism and other issues.

I’m sure the anti-third party ppl will be happy to entertain the idea after the election, yup.
You’re sure huh. You’ve talked to him then? Listen to his program regularly? How about LImbaugh, you think he thinks that of himself? Hannity? Beck?
The abortion issue is Dobson's objection to Rudi.
Personally, I think Thompson will be the choice of the party over Rudi anyway, and there is a great difference between him and the Hildabeast.
***Manipulate into creating a third party Run***
Exactly.
Shades of 1992.
The tiny Texan is the only reason Bubba was elected.
For all the faults of Rudy, and the others I’d rather see one of them in the White House than a communist like the wildebeast HELLary rotten klinton.
ever read Jeremiah? Or are you judging what Christians should do based on a non-Christian viewpoint?
The abortion issue is my objection to Rudy too. I hope you’re right about Thompson.
The judgments in Jeremiah applied to ancient, national Israel, not Christians today.
We have the best there is running as a Republican. He is a Christian Conservative. If this group would throw their support behind him, they could save themselves a great deal of trouble, and we could have the competent Duncan Hunter as our nominee. We would then stand a greater chance of restoring the country to what it was meant to be by the founding fathers for subsequent generations.
We are, indeed, in a spiritual war. We have already been provided with the right man. I am interested in no other than Duncan Hunter for president.
I’ve read Jeramiah. Dobson is no Jeramiah.
But the principle remains the same. Sometimes it’s not worth fighting because there is a reason for going into captivity and suffering hardship.
I’m not a Rudi supporter either, mostly because of the abortion issue. However, in a choice between Rudi and the Hildabeast, I’d take Rudi anyday.
Exactly.
Yet, some of the crew can’t see that there’s been alot of bailing already.
The ship they are steering is sinking and they’re handing out lollipops.
Yet, we have a real conservative choice this time around. I intend to support him come hell or high water!

Isnt’ what I said. Jeremiah told the Israelites not to fight Babylon when they came to take them into captivity, didn’t he? He was right, too. And he of course never had anyone listen to him. Certainly the Babylonian captivity was worse than ANY disobedient Israelite king...
“Exactly.

And now with a clinton running for president, we have another little village idiot from Texas that sprang up from the meadow muffin.
I bet that if the village idiot from the 14th congressional district of Texas doesn’t get the nomination, he’s going to run on a third ticket as a spoiler.
"In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart, for I have overcome the world."
The Church has always suffered at the hands of the world system, and will until the return of Christ. It is that suffering that weeds out the genuine from the counterfeit.
You all forget that Dobson wasn’t the only one present. Just the one everyone likes to pick on.
