Alarmed at the chance that the Republican party might pick Rudolph Giuliani as its presidential nominee despite his support for abortion rights, a coalition of influential Christian conservatives is threatening to back a third-party candidate in an attempt to stop him.
The group making the threat, which came together Saturday in Salt Lake City during a break-away gathering during a meeting of the secretive Council for National Policy, includes Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, who is perhaps the most influential of the group, as well as Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, the direct mail pioneer Richard Viguerie and dozens of other politically-oriented conservative Christians, participants said. Almost everyone present expressed support for a written resolution that if the Republican Party nominates a pro-abortion candidate we will consider running a third party candidate.
The participants spoke on condition of anonymity because the both the Council for National Policy and the smaller meeting were secret, but they said members of the intend to publicize its resolution. These participants said the group chose the qualified term consider because they have not yet identified an alternative third party candidate, but the group was largely united in its plans to bolt the party if Mr. Giuliani became the candidate.
A revolt of Christian conservative leaders could be a significant setback to the Giuliani campaign because white evangelical Protestants make up a major portion of Republican primary voters. But the threat is risky for the credibility of the Christian conservative movement as well. Some of its usual grass-roots supporters could still choose to support even a pro-choice Republican like Mr. Giuliani, either because they dislike the Democratic nominee even more or because they are worried about war, terrorism and other issues.

DUNCAN HUNTER is a man of principle, who risked his life and served his country.
He serves his country still.
There are many candidates who appear to serve themselves and their desire for power only.
Not sure where you get the idea Dobson thinks that. He’s a radio personality and can say what he wants. He has a good point I think. I’m sick of the liberal/moderate republicans they keep putting forth as candidates. Why do we then whine if they won’t stick their necks out and do the conservative thing, if we ourselves won’t risk a little and vote on principle rather than for “political strategy?”
Fortunately there is a conservative in this race. Whether republicans are smart enough to vote for the real deal remains to be seen.
November 1992: “Oh, well, maybe Bill won’t be too bad.”
I hear ya. And so far I’ve liked Hunter too. But everyone seems to be tooting Guiliani’s horn because the Republican party is split between conservatives and those who would drill smaller holes than the demoncrats in the hull of the ship.
Really? Have you seen constitutionparty.com?
That’s exactly what would happen.
Hillary elected.
The saddest thing is that even people who like Hunter and everything he stands for won’t vote for him because he’s not a political star.
Why was Perot a principled vote? He wasn’t any better of a candidate. I think perot voters voted out of spite, not principle.
In any case, then don’t complain when the candidate does what is politically expedient, since that is exactly what you’re advocating for each of us.
Yeah, that sums up Politics. It is all about picking the lesser of two evils.
Nice discussion going on.

Sorry Ladies - Protestants need no self-appointed Pope of America or “Justice Brothers”
Protestant Christians need no middle-man with his hand in their pockets and hand up their puppet bodies
Too much of their agenda slips out as Stealth Socialism in fancy vestments and robes
I can (and will) do for Ross Perot Dobson and any and all others who enable Hillary and Slick Willie to take over the USA for another eight (8) more years and turn it into a Commie Playland for the Red Elite - what I have done for many in the liberal media and for the Klintoons

Make my day Doobie
There are times when Christians have to choose the lesser of two evils, and any Republican would be a better choice than the Hildabeast.
Like I said — we’re sitting here on our thumbs because we are afraid to be the ‘only one’ throwing away our vote... or that there won’t be enough of us to make a difference. Well, that is a self defeating mindset. If that were the case, I should run on a platform derived from licking my finger and sticking it up in the air to feel which way the political winds are blowing. No sense losing on principle!
I am sure that he thinks of himself that he can make and break the Republican candidate.
I’m failing to see the difference lately between some of them and the demoncrats.
This is kind of a dumb thing to do this late in the game. If they want to do this, do it after the election and prepare for the 2012 election. All they’ll do now is split both partys.
I personally think that it will be political suicide not only for Republicans but for this country if Mr Dobson creates a third party.
It will bring about the dark ages of another clinton regime....Only this time it will be worse because she really will be in charge.
Amen bro.
One of my pet peeves is folks shooting their allies. We are so close to getting a conservative Supreme Court that could perhaps undo some of the damage of the last 50 years and we want to throw a hissy fit.
I do resent the limousine set in the RNC working against viable congressional candidates but the presidential primary is a horse race and once it is done we should make some effort to back a Republican (as long as said Republican does not go out of his way to throw us under the bus.)
Really hard to figure out why Dr. Dobson is so anxious to usher in a reign of terror against the American people.
That's where you are wrong. For years, we the base have been ignored (remember amnesty bill and its constant reintroduction under different names), thus we got George W. Bush (our very own version of Jimmy Carter). Now, because of W and the liberal Republicans in congress, our party is about to implode (we are in debt while the Democrats have a $21,000,000 surplus in their congressional campaign bank). It is either time to vote and lose once or twice on principle or get a democrat with an R behind his/her name for the foreseeable future. My decision is: If Rudy is nominated, I stay home or vote third party. I don't support liberals no matter which party they belong to; I'm tired of being betrayed and embarrassed by those like W and Rudy.
