After action reports would be easy enough to obtain.

Really? Is this something that could be requested under the Freedom of Information Act?

Heck, if they have been declassified, you could get them from the National Archives in College Park, Maryland (this is where the “contemporary” military archives are housed) or from the US Naval History Centre. Heck, you can get the deck logs, if any were kept, for the PCF.
