US military losses in Iraq for September stood at 70 on Sunday, the lowest monthly figure since July last year, according to an AFP tally based on Pentagon figures.
The figure also marks the fourth consecutive drop in the monthly death toll following a high of 121 in May. June saw 93 deaths, July 82 and August 79. The monthly toll in July 2006 was 53.
Two US soldiers were killed on Saturday in separate incidents, pushing the overall toll of American losses since the March 2003 invasion to 3,801.
A surge in US troop numbers saw an extra 28,500 personnel deployed from mid-February, mainly in Baghdad and the neighbouring province of Anbar, although commanders said most were not in combat positions until May.
US commanders say the strategy is starting to work and that levels of violence are dropping, allowing for a possible drawdown of the 160,000 or so troops now deployed.
"The trend is certainly in the right direction," US military spokesman Rear Admiral Mark Fox told a press conference in Baghdad.
"The surge unquestionably is what has been the catalyst that has created the opportunity to have more forces operating in more places at the same time and to deny Al-Qaeda and the extremists safe-haven and to take away sanctuaries."
The highest monthly toll was 137 in November 2004 when a US-led force stormed the insurgent bastion of Fallujah in fierce house-to-house fighting. Of the 137 dead, 126 were killed in action.
In April 2004, the second deadliest month since the invasion for US military personnel, 135 troops died. The month marked a turning point in the war with uprisings in Fallujah in the predominantly Sunni west, and in Shiite cities south of Baghdad.
But but I thought the surge wasn’t working! /sarc
Harry and Nancy and their cohorts are probably ripping their hair out right now...oh no, good news from Iraq!
But
But
But
We have lost.. Harry Reid
War noises are still occurring, but with much less frequency than before and most of the noises we hear are the good guys going after the scum.

US military deaths in Iraq lowest in 14 months...
won’t see this reported by the lib/dem press or spoken by the traitorous lib/dems in the senate or congress!!!!
NO! NO! NO! NO!

The Surge is Working!!!
Isn't it a shame that American soldiers would have to die in spades, for the left wing bottom feeders of this country to be happy? May God forgive their puerile and evil souls.
They will continue to spin, lie and put no context to any of the difficulties in this WOT.
The WH/RNC (and Freedom Watch) need to have a constant WOT supporting 527 up and running weekly ads. That we are 6 years into this WOT....and this has not happened is shameful.
So ... are the facts on the table enough for us to talk about building up our Military forces? Say another 12 Active duty combat brigades for the Army and another 6 for the Marines?
Can we double down on the surge?
Can we use it as a training ground for the future war with Iran / Syria / ???
Not good to be reporting this with troops still in the field.
CNN and the Dems are going to have a hard time spinning this one as ‘failure’. Rear Admiral Mark Fox is well respected and the numbers he cites cannot be argues with. This will once again reveal who the Left is really rooting for.
And our level of counterinsurgency activity is at an all time high. Hmmmmm.
So more troops equal less US casualties.... There is a lesson here that politicians will never get!!!
I’m sure Chrissy Matthews is all over this.
Even one is too many, but these numbers are very encouraging. I think the number of deaths due to hostile causes will continue to fall as the Iraqis realize that we are their friends and we are there to stay. This good news could have come earlier, much earlier, if so many who should know better hadn’t spent their time and political capital trying to force a troop withdrawal when the job hadn’t been done yet.
God bless our troops, each and every one of them, and their families and loved ones who cringe at even the thought of an unexpected knock on the door.
I am freelance photographer and shot a little girl’s first birthday party today. The mother of one of the little children at the party is in Iraq. It broke my heart to see this little girl having to live without her mother there to take her to a friends birthday party. You would not believe what a cute, and well-adjusted, little girl she is. She’s just about to turn one and her name is Heavenly! I have not heard that name, for real, before.
I really and truly hope that Iraqis get it that we don’t want to be there as a nation any longer than we need to. The faster they get it together the faster we will be out of there but departing as friends.
I have more good news. My hubby told me today that last month was the first month where we lost more GI’s to accidents (car wrecks and other things) in the States than we did in combat. Now I don’t know if he was referring to the Army in general or just our BN, but this is still good news.
