Thompson angers state Hispanics

When Fred Thompson said it might be time to review the practice of granting citizenship to every child born on American soil, he didn't acknowledge the seismic shift such an idea represents.

Citizenship by birth has been prescribed by the Constitution since 1868 -- and upheld for 109 years by the Supreme Court -- but the Republican presidential candidate made it sound anachronistic.

"I think that law was created at another time and place for valid reasons," the former U.S. senator from Tennessee said earlier this month. "It probably needs to be revisited."

Thompson's comments have angered Hispanic leaders -- many of them Republicans -- who say they are a crass attempt to court the GOP base.

With conservative voters demanding an end to illegal immigration, Republican candidates have been talking tough on that issue for months. In July, an adviser to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said the Romney campaign was researching the birthright-citizenship issue.

"It's not just ramping up the rhetoric," said Alex Villalobos, a Republican state senator from Miami. "It's pandering to extremists."

State Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, while not criticizing any candidate directly, called the idea a "xenophobic" notion that could drive Hispanic voters from the GOP.

"At best, this would be seen as mean-spirited," he said. "At worst, it's seen as bigotry."

Thompson made the comments in Cape Coral as he barnstormed through Florida two weeks ago.

He was blasting so-called "chain migration" -- the legal immigration preference that enables naturalized or birthright citizens to bring their non-American family members here -- when he was asked about children born here to illegal immigrants.

Thompson said he was less concerned about them, but that the issue of automatic citizenship should be reviewed.

"It probably needs to be revisited," he said.

In my simple mind we don’t even need to go that far. Our existing law already provides that we don’t have to give citizenship to those born her who are not subject to US jurisdiction. From the 14th Amendment - “persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.” Illegal aliens are not subject to our jurisdiction, therefore their children born here are not citizens. IANAL of course, and I am sure that many parties with interests other than those of the citizens of the United States would work very hard to find a way to prevent such a legal interpretation. They are not just wrong to do so, but traitorous IMAO.

It is unlikely that the Supreme Court will change the interpretation they gave after over 100 years.

Separate but equal was established constitutional law for over eighty years. Roe vs. Wade created unheard of constitutional rights
It's not unprecedent to overturned settled law.
And considering the untold impact illegals have on gover't services and society in general, I'd say this one is ripe for the picking.

To let it stand "as is" is to allow national suicide.

Any candidate that rubs elbows with Alex Jones is beyond loony. He or she ought to be institutionalized, not elected.

You make excellent argument against birthright citizenship. Every day the Mexican consulates are liaising with their illegal aliens ion the United States. They are also handing out Matricula Consular ID cards which further prove that these slimy consular offices treat illegal and legal Mexicans as though they are under Mexican jurisdiction. At the very least the consulates are behaving as if illegal Mexicans are under US jurisdiction and Mexican jurisdiction. A shared nationality

Mexican consulates also are lining up lawyers and paying for them in certain cases with illegal alien Mexicans

Legal aliens must still maintain the passport +/- visa from their former country. Their children born here are citizens. If a woman is legally here, and not sneaking in, has a child here, that child is a citizen. This has been abused by elected idiots.

I know someone who wants to become a naturalized citizen. It took 6 months to get her visa attachment and 6 months longer for her green card. Her work sponsor needed her ASAP. And it's 3 years now that she's waiting to become naturalized. She hired a lawyer for $3000 to run the paperwork around for the visa/green card hassle. And retains the same lawyer for the citizenship imbroglio.

If Condi Rice wants to become the football comissioner, she can walk through the State Dept. and fire everybody that's fat, lazy and stupid for football credentials. And visit all these Federal Buildings to see if they got the message.

I don’t give a flyin’ @#$% about “angered” Hispanics. When it comes to breaking the law, they are acting like Islamists who are “angered” by anything and everything.

If these Hispanics are legal residents or American citizens they better act like it and not support racial anti-Americanism and La Razza.

Candidates seem to become tone deaf as to their
common sense. Another one is Rudy G., promoting
his endorsement of former Cal. Gov., Pete Wilson..
that goes over like a lead balloon with the Blacks
and Hispanic voters....He led ballot measure that
was a killer of anything good for illegals...fine as
far as it goes..but not empathetic to their plight

I do. There are places called barrios where violent gangs run the show. Exactly like in Mexico, El Salvador, Brazil, etc. Don't stop for anything if you must drive through. And don't make eye contact with anyone. Ask any cop about the terrain off-the-record if you must go there.

Other postings and articles here at FR have indicated that the Supreme Court decision of 100 years ago was in reference to the children LEGAL immigrants.
Apparently, IF this is true, then the Supreme Court has not yet ruled on a case that involved the children of ILLEGAL immigrants.

Unless there is some OTHER case, other than this 100 year old decision???

Rudy G. pisses me off!

1) He dresses up like a chick.

2) He took "credit" for something related to 9/11 that supposedly made him some kind of "hero". To this day I have no idea what that was.

3) He actively went out and made millions of dollars off speaking about 9/11 and promoting his businesses related to 9/11 (security consulting). That made me want to spit. Making money off the dead like that. Why anyone would pay to hear him rattle on about 9/11 escapes me.

Oh, and while I'm on a small rant Ron Paul sucks too. Please go to chrispeden.org and give Chris some money.

Here is the statement of someone who knows better than anyone posting to this thread.

"constitutional lawyer James C. Ho, a former law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, said amendment authors "clearly meant" to include the children of foreigners. In fact, he said, opponents at the time warned it would do just that. Lawmakers "debated the wisdom of guaranteeing birthright citizenship," said Ho, "but no one disputed" its meaning.

Assuming Fred is trying to get votes, it was a bad tactical decision to bring this issue up in Florida, of all places.

Exactly....and who do you see doing all the marching and screeching and demanding and threatening? I keep looking for illegal Asians or Canadians but can't seem to see anything but Hispanic faces....

I know Spanish. I check out Espanol TV once in a while. It's exactly the same trash in a different language.

If they are 'angered' they can be useful. Tell all the SA gangs in our prison system they will be freed to go to Iran and harazza that bunch.
