That was a week and a half ago. I am thrilled today that almost all of my students can divide and convert fractions to decimals (based on a test). I am scheduling one-on-one tutoring with the other students to ensure that they will be able to do so, too. I realized that what they needed was a recipe, something to follow every time so that it was systematic. I was kind of intimidated that we would get so far behind in the actual physical science material that we wouldnt be at the level necessary to take the first periodic assessment offered by the state, but now we can move on and explore these advanced areas. Now we can devote time to interpreting graphs, reviewing slope, and discussing how to graph speed.
My students sometimes laugh at how excited I get in class when they master a skill: Mr. Chapman, youre crazy! and Mister, why are you sweating so much? I constantly remind them of how brilliant they are and that I am amazed at their growth. Even if you dont like science, it doesnt matter; what matters is that youll be good at it, I tell them. Just using the future tense instead of the conditional solidifies our work together

Lance Chapman, originally from Woodburn, Ind., is a 2007 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, triple majoring in mathematics, life sciences and Spanish. While in school, he worked as a Spanish translator for the South Bend Indiana Health Center and volunteered at a local hospital. As a volunteer at the South Bend Center for the Homeless
A 5 year old (one with responsible parents)should be able to do that.
Talk about disconnect....
Nothing wrong with praising your students, but false praise only inflates their egos.
Lol!
I gave my dogs a treat everytime they cr@pped on the carpet...
...now only one of them can alert me when it wants to be let out to relieve itself.
(Of course, I didnt read the article.)
The other 132 thought it was too stupid to actually answer the question.
More power to the self-esteem curriculum - if you’re a Communist.
You see, when reality impacts these childrens’ lives and they are not able to reap the bounty of their faux genius, they will soon demand their fair share by other means.
Telling a child they are the best, when they are among the worst, is sure to create even more future Liberals.
If they were that far behind, I’m surprised he was able to teach them to divide and convert fractions to decimals in only a week.
I am currently in my seventeenth year of homeschooling. This experience is one of the reasons that I teach my kids myself.
Judging from the responses my guess would be not many bothered to actually read the piece on the site.
I'm amazed that so many did not read the post before replying or can't comprehend what they read.
You might wind up to be a nurse or assist a doctor though (for example). That's the "humanity" in the student and how he perceives his role in the world along with his capabilities and his endurance.
We are equal only in the fact that we are living human beings. All other things about us are unequal.
I always wondered how they can teach that "Everyone is Special", then teach "Everyone is equal"?
You're so right! My sister and I could do it at age "10/2"
...but then, we were homeschooled. And we weren't told we were brilliant.

A www.greatschools.net rating of 1 out of 10

Another example of what happens when you fill our schools with illegal immigrants. There should be a rating at greatschools on safety. It is too bad that American Blacks are at such an economic disadvantage and cant put their kids in private schools. Leave the public schools to the illegals. Its too late to vote out the corrupt city government, they pander to the illegals and the Hispanic population is the biggest voting block.
No, he has normal students educated with the typical Everyday Math curriculum.
You see, he asked the wrong question. He should have asked, “What process would you use to divide 10 by 2”. The actual answer “5” is less important in today’s curriculum than how you arrive at any answer.
Do you want to hire one of these kids as an engineer for your next bridge job ?
