'Why are you sweating?' (I asked all 140 of my eighth-grade students to divide 10 by 2.)
LA Times ^ | 26 September 2007 | Lance Chapman

That was a week and a half ago. I am thrilled today that almost all of my students can divide and convert fractions to decimals (based on a test). I am scheduling one-on-one tutoring with the other students to ensure that they will be able to do so, too. I realized that what they needed was a recipe, something to follow every time so that it was systematic. I was kind of intimidated that we would get so far behind in the actual physical science material that we wouldn’t be at the level necessary to take the first periodic assessment offered by the state, but now we can move on and explore these advanced areas. Now we can devote time to interpreting graphs, reviewing slope, and discussing how to graph speed.

My students sometimes laugh at how excited I get in class when they master a skill: “Mr. Chapman, you’re crazy!” and “Mister, why are you sweating so much?” I constantly remind them of how brilliant they are and that I am amazed at their growth. “Even if you don’t like science, it doesn’t matter; what matters is that you’ll be good at it,” I tell them. Just using the future tense instead of the conditional solidifies our work together

A 5 year old (one with responsible parents)should be able to do that.

I asked all 140 of my eighth-grade students to divide 10 by 2. Just eight of them wrote down 5.

I constantly remind them of how brilliant they are...

Talk about disconnect....

Nothing wrong with praising your students, but false praise only inflates their egos.

The other 132 thought it was too stupid to actually answer the question.

More power to the self-esteem curriculum - if you’re a Communist.

You see, when reality impacts these childrens’ lives and they are not able to reap the bounty of their faux genius, they will soon demand their fair share by other means.

Telling a child they are the best, when they are among the worst, is sure to create even more future Liberals.

If they were that far behind, I’m surprised he was able to teach them to divide and convert fractions to decimals in only a week.

Many years ago I became a substitute high school math teacher for some students whose teacher had taken a maternity leave. I had never taught before. I had a student in my geometry class who was failing in January when I started teaching. After a few days of watching her read a book while I taught, I called her up after class and asked her why she wasn't paying attention. She told me that she was failing and didn't understand geometry. So, I asked her if she'd like to meet with me once a week during her lunch break and we'd go over her homework together. She agreed to do that and got a perfect score on the next test. She continued to get perfect scores on her tests. All it took was a little one-on-one and she became a great student.

I am currently in my seventeenth year of homeschooling. This experience is one of the reasons that I teach my kids myself.

Judging from the responses my guess would be not many bothered to actually read the piece on the site.

I'm amazed that so many did not read the post before replying or can't comprehend what they read.

I taught my granddaughter to check her work by doing a reverse operation or by doing it "her way". Damn teachers want it "written" their way and sometimes it's just not the best way to compute. She is now in an advanced math class.

Hey, what's really important is that they feel good about themselves - not the content.

When are the schools going to learn that if you don't like science and math and are just "average" in those subjects, you're probably not going to be an astro-physisist.

You might wind up to be a nurse or assist a doctor though (for example). That's the "humanity" in the student and how he perceives his role in the world along with his capabilities and his endurance.

We are equal only in the fact that we are living human beings. All other things about us are unequal.

I always wondered how they can teach that "Everyone is Special", then teach "Everyone is equal"?

You're so right! My sister and I could do it at age "10/2"
...but then, we were homeschooled. And we weren't told we were brilliant.

A www.greatschools.net rating of 1 out of 10
API score of 541
Average class size 28
Fully-credentialed teachers, 60 percent
Average years teaching, 6
Free & reduced price lunch, 83 percent
English learners, 39 percent
African American, 31 percent
Hispanic, 68 percent

Another example of what happens when you fill our schools with illegal immigrants. There should be a rating at greatschools on safety. It is too bad that American Blacks are at such an economic disadvantage and can’t put their kids in private schools. Leave the public schools to the illegals. It’s too late to vote out the corrupt city government, they pander to the illegals and the Hispanic population is the biggest voting block.

No, he has normal students educated with the typical Everyday Math curriculum.

You see, he asked the wrong question. He should have asked, “What process would you use to divide 10 by 2”. The actual answer “5” is less important in today’s curriculum than how you arrive at any answer.

Do you want to hire one of these kids as an engineer for your next bridge job ?
