Chinese, US citizens charged with espionage in San Francisco

A Chinese national and a US citizen have been charged with conspiring to steal sensitive microchip designs capable of use in military technology, justice officials said Wednesday.

The US Attorney's office in northern California said Lee Lan and Ge Yuefei had been indicted on multiple charges of conspiracy to commit economic espionage and to steal trade secrets.

Lee, 42, a US citizen, and Ge, 34, a Chinese national, had sought to steal secrets from their employer, NetLogics Microsystems, and from the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, a statement said.

The two men had set up a company for the purpose of developing and marketing products related to the stolen trade secrets, and had attempted to secure funding from the Chinese government, it added.

"The vigorous enforcement of intellectual property statutes increases the economic vitality of this region, and adds to the security of our nation as a whole," US attorney Scott Schools said.

"This office is committed to the prosecution of individuals who seek to benefit foreign governments or instrumentalities with stolen trade secrets."

Lee and Ge have been released on 300,000 dollars bail and must reappear in court on October 29. They face up to 15 years in jail and a 500,000 dollar fine if convicted.

US officials have said China and Russia are spying in the United States at levels close to those of the Cold War.

In July, FBI Director Robert Mueller told Congress that China's espionage operations were a "substantial concern" and Beijing was stealing US secrets to boost its fast developing military and economy.

Earlier this month, the Financial Times reported that China's military had hacked into the Pentagon's military computer network -- though the Chinese government denied the report.

Read Jeff Head’s “Dragon’s Fury”. This non-fiction = his fiction.

And how do we stop what has been going on for many decades? We let anyone and everything into this country. Our borders are wide open. We allow DUAL CITIZENSHIP with hostile, and potentially hostilek, countries. What the hell do we expect to happen???

Months back I had the opportunity to speak with a lady who had just become a US citizen. She originated from China. She noted how EASY IT IS TO COMMIT FRAUD, TO STEAL, TO TAKE SECRETS and simply send them to China. She was amazed at how lax this country is about its sensitive information, all the way from personal identification to national security secrets. Nothing profoundly new, but it was interesting hearing the opinion of a Chinese citizen who had become an American citizen.....

Hello Washington....???

Dual Citizenship is a recent PC development. How do you pledge allegiance to more than one country? Impossible. And very dangerous.

Yes it is VERY dangerous. And that is why I object to it. Yet Washington does not flinch...as you say, more PC crap. Way too many people are in the country, LEGALLY AND ILLEGALLY, to just TAKE from America in many different forms. They do not care about America, only to take from it and use it. Our government permits that. A sorry situation -— if someone wishes to be a USA citizen, that is ALL they should be and with dedicated loyalty to America — otherwise we do not need any more PARASITES in America. We are paying dearly in many ways for the vast numbers we have already.

If the allegations are true, the Chinese gov't could easily pony up the bail and help them flee.

In a word, we expect globalism to happen.

Regardless of a massive trade defecit with China, regardless of abundant Chinese espionage, regardless of Chinese imports being inferior, hazardous and even deadly, regardless of the fact they won't allow U.S. inspectors into their factories, regardless that they are building a military that will soon pose a grave threat to our own, regardless that they got caught illegally shipping thousands of assault rifles into our country, the new world order must march forward.

It’s time to vote in all new representatives and senators that will do what is good for america, not what will get them relected for another term. This applies to both democrats and republicans.

The only possible way to get honest people to run for office is to get rid of the Lamestream Communist Media. They will crucify any decent person that wants to run.

They do not care about America, only to take from it and use it.

Years ago I was a "shining city on a hill" guy, I thought if you wanted to get here you must love freedom & that was just great.

Since then I've had a chance to get to know a great many new arrivals & realize a very large percentage of them are not only here to line their own pockets by whatever means available, but otherwise harbor a visceral dislike for America & Americans and think their old culture is superior to our's.

Not all, but very many. Its turned me into a real cynic regarding the entire topic.

We'd better start doing a MUCH better job of screening who has the privilege of coming here.

#15. I see a multitude of countries combining their resources to thwart the United States, to minimize its influence: Venezuela, Russia, China, Iran, North Korea. How will you deal with this looming global crisis of fascists and communists joining together against us?

Duncan Hunter: The answer to this combination of antagonists is to maintain a strong U.S. military, utilize the leverage of our economy to deny the positions that several of these nations enjoy in the world economy (for example, energy independence), and to utilize our resources to consolidate allies whenever possible. With respect to China, we must reverse our massive trade loss, which is being used in part to purchase arms. With respect to Iran, at some point Western intervention may be necessary to deny the development of a nuclear device. With respect to North Korea and many others, the further development of Western missile defense systems is paramount.

“They face up to 15 years in jail and a 500,000 dollar fine if convicted.”

...”up to” 15 years in jail?

Sounds like a lenient penalty for such an egregious offense as espionage — “economic” or otherwise.

Dual Citizenship is very dangerous. On the plus side, the perp can be deported to his country of origin, if his US Citizenship can be revoked. Otherwise, the US is stuck with the schmuck.

Considering we do no checking of who we let into this country or have access to sensitive systems there really isn’t any control of this country.
