I’m still at a loss as to how calling another person who looks very much like you can be considered racist. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Slovakians are Europeans with skin color not much different than white Brits or Americans. Or not different at all. How can verbal attacks on Slovakians be considered racist? That’s really stretching it. What is going on in Britain?

Yes, that's for sure.

Maybe racism is being used instead of 'ethnic', to mean prejudices against other nationalities? My grandparents were all immigrants about a century ago, amongst thousands of East Europeans, an influx. My grandmother was Slovak and married a Russian. They experienced a variety of ethnic slurs and discriminations in the new country, but came here legally and learned the language and were happy to be here. Still, it was so difficult for my grandmother to find work to support her children after her husband's young death, that she changed the last name to an Italian sounding name and moved temporarily to NYC in search of work, which she found. It seems it's the influx of a large group unmotivated to assimilate that is causing the ethnic tensions.

Are Eastern Europeans, who are as white as the English, honorary nonwhites in the eyes of the UK's PC police? Do Irish, Scots, Welsh, and Jews who come into conflict with the English receive the superior status of "honorary nonwhites"? Or, since these ethnic groups have been around England for a few centuries, are they not so honored?

We have our own version in the U.S. of subjective determination of who is awarded the victimhood status of being "nonwhite". Some prestigious universities have set de facto limits on the number of Asians in their student body, all for the sake of diversity and tolerance. These Asians, who excel academically over other nonwhites as well as those of European descent, are discriminated against under the "affirmative action" scam, even more so than are whites.

Being judged not by the color of one's skin but by the contact of one's character is still a dream, whether under the old days of segregation or the current era of PC-driven affirmative action.

THE Football Association have lodged an official complaint with UEFA after racist abuse was aimed at Emile Heskey, Ashley Cole and Kieron Dyer in Bratislava.

The players had to endure racist chants from Slovakian fans throughout the match.

Heskey said: “The level of the abuse was unbelievable, you would have had to remove most of the spectators to stop it. But you just have to rise above it - the best way to do that is to win the game and that is what we did.

“Of course I could hear what they were saying, you would have had to be deaf not to hear it. But sometimes you just have to shut your mind off from it and just go out and play to shut them up.”

Coach Sven Goran Eriksson was also appalled. He said: “In 2002 this should not be happening.”

FA spokesman Adrian Bevington said: “We are making the strongest complaint possible to UEFA. It was appalling that the players were subjected to this. We met with security chiefs before the game because we had raised fears about the problems of racism in light of the recent trouble players have faced in Europe.”

The game was also marred by outbreaks of trouble and Eriksson said: “It didn’t look good at all from the dug-out. I just saw people running all over - I hope no one got injured. It reminded me of what happened many years ago in the Heysel Stadium in Belgium.”
