Queen Hillary, Empress of Mesopotamia (Andrew Sullivan rips neocon Hillary)
Atlantic ^ | 25 Sep 2007 | Andrew Sullivan

Posted on 09/25/2007 8:43:40 AM PDT by tlb

My friend, David Brooks, does his best to reinforce the Hillary-Is-Inevitable consensus in Washington right now. He may regret this, though:

On "This Week With George Stephanopoulos," Clinton could have vowed to vacate Iraq. Instead, she delivered hawkish mini-speeches that few Republicans would object to. She listed a series of threats and interests in the region and made it clear that she’d be willing to keep U.S. troops there to handle them.

If Clinton is that comfortable with a permanent occupation of Iraq at this point in the election cycle, how comfortable do you think she's going to be next year? You think a politician so obsessed with gaining and wielding power is happy to relinquish any in the Middle East?

Patrick Ruffini draws the obvious conclusion:

Hillary is morphing into a George W. Bush Democrat. While that will draw heat from an increasingly desperate Obama, she will pay the price in the general election, not because she’s totally wrong, but because Democrat-inclined voters will smell something fishy about their gal acting like the one they’ve so long fantasized of kicking to the curb. And if she wins, the BushClintonBushClinton consensus will be back.

The conservative Washington Establishment is swooning for Hillary for a reason. The reason is an accommodation with what they see as the next source of power (surprise!); and the desire to see George W. Bush's invasion and occupation of Iraq legitimated and extended by a Democratic president (genuine surprise). Hillary is Bush's ticket to posterity.

Wow, Andrew "Bareback" Sullivan is now a conspiracy theorist. There's a surprise.

This conservative never received any memo telling him to "swoon" for Hillary Clinton.

Yep. I guaranty that if Hillary were caught playing sex games in a stall of a men’s room, there would be no repercussions.

As George Stephanopoulos said about Bill: "We kept the promises we meant to keep."

Hillary is hawkish on Iraq? That's because she thinks it will play well in the polls right now. Her core believers are aware that she means none of it.

Hillary Clinton would give Sun Tzu a run from his money in the arts of deception. We can trust nothing - absolutely nothing - that emanates from the mouth of this serial prevaricator.

There is no "Conservative Washington", it has been a liberal (now read Progressive city) as long as I've known it. Lobbyists swirl around it and the liberal education establishment rules all the suburbs.

Conservatives, of which I don't count the current establishment. Come in, get chewed up and spit out. Conversions to liberalism is almost a daily occurrence as the corrupting power of this city is astounding.

Term limits were the only hope of our founding Father's dream of a citizenship legislature, but with most incumbency reelection rates of about 90% that doesn't happen and the corruption is hardly resisted.

The latest Washington establishment is from the Democrats in Congress and the Senate. There is not doubt they want to go from a Freedom based government to a socialist one with high taxes. Just wait for a few more months and you will hear all about it.

Hillary is clever enough to exploit her devotion from the MSM. Ordinarily, a candidate who talks constantly out of both sides of her mouth, i.e., giving speeches containing diametrically opposed positions, would be called out by the media. However, for fear of offending her, the MSM will basically ignore and when necessary, attempt to reconcile her inconsistencies for her benefit. The MSM knows that nothing she says has meaning now, and as president, she’ll return to the doctrinaire liberal/socialist totalitarianism that she has been espousing since her days at Yale.

I hate to say he’s on to something but he’s on to something.

Hilldog will not retreat from Iraq, she had the opportunity on that show Sunday to say she would and she didn’t.

Andy Panda needs to get over it. The United States is NEVER leaving Iraq, any more than we left Germany, Japan, South Korea, Italy, etc. The vital interests of this country and the rest of western civilization demand a strong military presence in the region where our lifeblood, oil, comes from. Everything to the contrary is just rhetoric.

There’s no “swooning” being done for Shrillery unless it’s by Helen Thomas or Rosie O’Donnell.... I don’t know of any conservatives that swoon over her..... as for the Demagogues, a lot of her poll support is based upon the assumption of inevitability. If anything happens between now and January to shake that assumption then the race could get interesting.

Those who believe only an anti-war candidate can win are smokin' strong juju.

With Imanutjob spitting up in NYC and The War playing on PBS...I expect a resurgence of the warrior American.

America is crossing the threshold of reality...and right smack square into the middle of sanity.

Woe unto the jihadis.

Andrew Sullivan was an enthusiastic supporter of the Iraq War until Bush announced the federal marriage amendment.
