Christine Demsteader discovers that for one village in southern Sweden the humble apple is more than a healthy snack: a push to support Swedish farmers led a local artist to turn apples into an art form.
The year 1987 was crunch time for the Swedish apple. The combined forces of the then- EEC and the USA posed a threat to apple farmers' livelihoods. But local producers in southern Sweden decided to bite back. And their fight proved so fruitful they even made it into the record books.

Nice, but IMO these artworks can’t compete with the architechtural gems of the actual region, Skåne/Scania.
When it comes to owning nice houses, a guy like Donald Trump is a looser compared to the people who inhabit these historical Southern Swedish residences (’Kärnan’ and ‘Landskrona Slott’ are not private properties though):

Wow. Somebody put a lot of work into that stuff.

- Glad you enjoyed the images.
I’m not from this part of Sweden myself, but I have to admit Skåne/Scania and especially Österlen is one of the most beautiful parts of my country. The nature is fantastic and so are the ancient historic buildings and THE FOOD as well.
Greetings from Sweden!
Seesh, what a waste, at least we burn our food for fuel.
No only is the apple art beautiful, imagine the delicious aroma of the exhibit.
The architecture on the other link is wonderful.
What’s a “slott?”
“Seesh, what a waste, at least we burn our food for fuel.”
- You do? I believe your country is somewhat different from mine then. Our cars run on gas and our homes are heated by nuclear energy :-)
“Whats a slott?”
- A slott is simply a palace or a manor.
Naturally, few Swedes live in a Slott. But many live in nice houses and condos/apartments.
I like the 'Appelkind.
My Danish dictionary has 'slott' as 'palace.' The languages are similar, but the Danish version is 'slot,' no double tt at the end, so it might be something different. I didn't see 'slott' on the page so I couldn't place it in context.

- Thanks for these appreciative words about Swedish art.
I haven’t been to Kivik (the apple capital of Sweden) during their festival, but I have visited the place during other parts of the year. Really idyllic, it’s almost like a fairytale.
Germany, France, Britain and Italy might have even more of impressive palaces than Sweden, but when it comes to standard of living, I’d say the Swedish upper class live pretty well. Especially our royal family;

‘Slott’ is the Swedish word for ‘Slot’.
Written Danish is pretty similar to its Swedish counterpart, but few Swedes understand spoken Danish (while many Danes understand a Swede that speaks Swedish).
Thank you. I guessed that was the case but wanted to know for sure.
Kivlik, then, is an upper class area of the country?
What is the size of Sweden? Can its size be compared with one our states?

- Sweden is big territory wise by European measures, but the population is only 9.1 million - about the size of Georgia, New Jersey or North Carolina.
Kivik is a small town situated by the shore of the (South) Baltic Sea where some inhabitants of Skåne/Scania (Southernmost part of Sweden) have summer houses. I think some people from Stockholm own houses there too.
There are some people residing there who still live from fishing, but most of the houses are owned by city dwellers who spend their holidays and weekends there.
Kivik itself has no slotts/palaces, but close to Kivik there are several magnificent residences like those featured on the Wikipedia site I linked to above. These houses are not owned by ‘ordinary’ Swedes, but by people who are far richer than average countrymen of mine.
“Kind of reminds me of the South Dakota Corn Palace. It’s a building that they decorate with murals made of corn.”
- Thanks for letting me know about this corn masterpiece, fellow FReeper.
I’d like to see view it in reality.
Long live art!
We have very few "grand manor" style houses; simply don't have the long history. But there are grand estates such as Hearst Castle in California and the Vanderbilt mansion in North Carolina (also no longer private properties).

- Thanks for posting.
Those are truly magnificent estates (whether they are owned by private individuals or not).
Thank you. Your description of Kivlik makes me think of Newport, Rhode Island. The villiage isn’t necessarily grand but the mansions are.
