Kurt Waldheim was barred by the Justice Department from entering during his term as President of Austria. However, I don't believe he ever tried to enter the US to address the UN. That would have been a test of our host country agreement with the UN. To the best of my knowledge, it has never been tested.

State rather than Justice, though that's not important. He appealed the decision and threatened lawsuits, but to my knowledge didn't try the UN excuse, and I don't know the extent of our agreements. Hard to imagine, but possible, that we're obligated to issue a visa.

Personally, I'd have confined his visa to a direct route between his local residence, one, and the UN. There's no reason he needs NYC and 25 miles surrounding the city to give a UN speach.

Diplomatic Immunity.

He has immunity only because we extend it to him, that's within our control.

He’s going to lose more than alumni funding, it looks like. He managed to get Sheldon Silver mad. Kiss it goodbye, Bollinger.

In Iran they certainly won't hear the truth about this farce of a speech; they certainly won't be told how dumb and flustered he was, and they certainly won't hear the "boos," --

From Pajamas Media: Mahmoud's Manhattan Moment.

PJM’s Ardeshir Arian reports the following from inside Iran regarding Ahmadinejad’s speech today:

1) VOA Television nightly services on HotBird and TeleStar 12 satellites were disrupted in Tehran for about 20 minutes, as soon as he was to be introduced at Columbia university’s podium. Iranian citizens did not hear the criticism of Ahmadinejad by Columbia President Bollinger. The way the Islamic Republic does this is to scramble the signals of these satellites locally, using stationary and mobile microwave dishes.

2) It has been rumored from inside Iran that one of the conditions for Iranian-American Haleh Esfandiari’s release from Evin Prison was for Ahmadinejad to give his speech at Columbia University and to visit Ground Zero. Ahmadinejad’s speech at Columbia was canceled last year.

I almost got the manager of my local Greek diner to go with me by telling him Mahmoud thinks he’s a modern Socrates.

I turned on radio approx. 30 minutes ago and Hugh Hewitt was interviewing Michael Yon: new dispatch coming.

Immediately following, he interviewed Rep. Duncan Hunter (via phone also) re the CU/Bollinger hosting of Ahmanutjob.

my local Greek diner

Without even looking in the restaurant section of the phonebook I can pretty much tell you that we don't have one of those around these parts. About as foreign as we get is when Betty from Aunt Claire's Kuntry Kitchen goes of on a tangent and puts paprika in the mashed potatoes.
Oh, there is a livestock feed store in the back. Ms Claire runs it too.

I stand corrected. The wife just told me that they are all talking about a chinese restaurant that opened just last week. I’ll have to try it out....

Thank you, tina .... could be him on the far right?

Now, perhaps those are the hostage takers only, but mahmood was later delegated to “guard” them...

Check this out; I found the link from another site. Bollinger really stepped in it with this and he knows it:

State rather than Justice, though that's not important

Having worked for the State Department for 28 years, I understand the difference. However, it was being on a Justice Department watch list that stopped the State Department from issuing the visa. The 25 mile radius from Columbus Circle is the agreed upon standard minimum. Some countries impose a similar limit on US diplomats as part of reciprocity.

Then you might know, do we have a treaty based obligation to the UN to admit diplomats? I understand the UN site itself has some odd status, but they have to get to the UN.

Right after his appearance at Columbia, Bill Richardson was interviewed and he said that although he disagreed with Ahmadinejad, we need to sit down and negotiate with the Iranians.

Just saw this on teevee. What a fool; how can a "leading" politician be so damn dumb?

It’s FARSI, not Arabic.

Then it's not the q'ran. It may be only quoted or cited in arabic...

Sadly, I think you're both correct. The class of folk he was spouting his Farsi at were his future jihadis, and the uneducated (which includes a great deal of the turd world). He poked the satan in the eye, live, on camera. If this goes as he expects (and I suppose it will), the mullahs may see an opening to be grateful he's rallied. The west will be appalled, but they already are, as will the underground liberty seeking Iranians. His outpouring for those poor Palestinians will mullahfy [sic] the ME masses, and the game in the sandbox will continue without missing a beat.

This little islamofascist is on a roll. Keep your eyes open, Israel will not stand by to be destroyed, and currently, neither will we. I see some very interesting times ahead.
