Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, an old-fashioned conservative with a strong libertarian streak, inspires a small but growing base of fervent admirers with his strict interpretation of Congress' powers
No matter who shows up at this week's Republican presidential debate in Baltimore, it's a good bet the biggest applause will go to the most conservative man onstage.
He's Rep. Ron Paul, a perfect protest candidate for 2008. Trained as a physician, he's "Dr. Paul" to a small but growing base of fervent admirers - more than a few of whom could fairly be called zealots.
Around the Capitol, the Texas congressman is "Dr. No," for his frequent, and often lonely, insistence on opposing any legislation that, in his view, exceeds the authority explicitly given to Congress by the framers of the Constitution.
Now, at 72, this enemy of central government is finding overnight success in some unusual places, such as college campuses.

Ron Paul Revolution Ping.
“Now, at 72, this enemy of central government is finding overnight success in some unusual places, such as college campuses.”
Yes and we know that success is because of his small government stance. It has nothing to do with sharing the same defeatist opinion in regards to a certain war. Yeppers, sure, you bet.
Did you read the article? Paul prominently displays his small government stands which are far more consistent that the other candidates. BTW, if you are right, why aren't these college kids supporting Kucinich?
The proper small-government response to 9/11 would be to send a punitive military expedition to the Middle East. Find the enemy, kill them, and leave smoking ruins.
But don’t tell them how to live, or what kind of government they should have.
“Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, an old-fashioned conservative with a strong libertarian streak, inspires a small but growing base of fervent admirers “
“Growing” primarily from democrats and various other misfits who can’t stomach supporting an adult candidate. He’s not a drain on Republicans.
“BTW, if you are right, why aren’t these college kids supporting Kucinich?”
They are. Where do you think the majority of his support comes from?
“Paul prominently displays his small government stands which are far more consistent that the other candidates.”
Agreed. That said, the college kids like him despite that fact, simply because of his stance on the war. They don’t support him, they support his opinion on the war. Everything else is just smoke and mirrors.
Think Joe Lieberman and Ned Lamont, except in reverse. Conservatives supported Lieberman in that election simply because of his war stance. This is no different.
But don't forget that immediately after 9/11, the Lugnut Rockwell types opposed doing exactly that. They used all the same arguments against intervention of any kind, even only in Afghanistan, that they now use against Iraq.
Problem is that a “private military” must be maintained at high (and expensive) tempo in peace time to achieve those kind of capabilities. And indiscriminate killing in today’s wired world creates more enemies than it kills.
I have a craving for a burrito supreme and some nachos.
The Lieberman/Lamont analogy doesn’t work. There were only three (actually two) candidates in that race.
Ru paul is a nit wit, period!
Well, the alternative is true isolationism. No foreigners admitted, no one allowed to leave.
BTW, how “private” can an organization be when it only has one client and all its operating parameters are tightly set by the government?
Loony Tunes candidate with a bunch of numb nut dimwit followers, and that is my toned down politically correct statement.... not how I really feel
Ron Paul’s anti-war shrieking is the only thing that keeps him in the news. Take that away and let him preach libertarian themes alone...and...yawn... no media coverage.
“Well, the alternative is true isolationism. No foreigners admitted, no one allowed to leave.”
Another alternative is that you have a crippled conception of diametrically opposed “proper” alternatives, and neither apply to reality. Your world model may not be applicable to human nature.
Yes perhaps the anti-police action stance is valid to an extent. But there are a few people I know in their 20s that are getting out in the work force and realizing their paychecks have these huge chunks out of them they weren't expecting. They want that money back and they realize the same ol' same ol' isn't going to get it this time.
What it looks like is a generation has been raised to be conservative and many of them (thank God) are still idealistic in their view of conservatism. The only candidate that represents that idealistic view (true limited government) to them is Ron Paul.
I would venture to say that if Paul was a registered Libertarian , he would not have near the support he currently has.
Much ( not all ) of Paul’s support comes from Deaniacs and other sordid Leftist types that are using his campaign as a vehicle in an attempt to change the politics of the Republican primary / party .
The Dim side is full of anti - war candidates and there is not much work to be done there , in their opinion . The Republican party , on the other hand , is quite a different story ...
