I heard his interview with Bob Costas, where he said there was lots of criticism against Lincoln during the Civil war,and FDR in WWll,and then proceeded to critise President Bush for the war on terror.Apparently the irony went right over his head.

To be honest with you Non, I found the similiarites between how McCleenan ran for the presidential election in 64 very similiar with how I suspect the Dem will run in 08.
As I recall McCleenan ran as a Democrat against Lincoln and hinted that if he won the election he would make peace with the South.
Not surprising he won in NJ, heck they made him their governor.

There is hope! I got the episode list from PBS, one of the episodes is titled FUBAR! Also, our local PBS is scheduing a "catch-up" next Sunday, showing the previous episodes all day. I've been looking forward to this for a long time! And for those who are concerned about the lack of this battle or that battle, I believe the focus of the piece is on 4 AMERICAN towns and their vets. So, unless someone from that town in Minnesota was the sniper at Stalingrad(?)...we won't hear about it.

My dad was only 66. Our birthdays were 6 months apart (mine December 29th, his, June 29th). He passed away on January 29th, 1997.
He had a brother who died when he and mom got married, who was only 21. Seven years later, they gave their first born his brother's first name.
So far, I've more than doubled my namesake's age (48), and I have no intentions of stopping!

It feels so strange when I think about how young he was when he died. (at least by my present perspective)
He was overseas since North Africa in 43 and did not get home until late 45, he married my mom and had 7 children, sending two of them off to college before his death.
Not bad, dad, not bad at all.

I was being a bit harsh on Ken Burns for the liesurely pace of his
“Jazz” and “Baseball” documentaries.
I’m usually the one that my friends/family will accuse of being a
fan of “slow-paced” productions from the BBC or other international shows.
I may not be a big fan of all of Burn’s work-product...but generally
I’d say they beat a lot of the other competitors in the history-documentary market.
Burns and his crew do a great job of documenting pivotal moments
of US history/culture.
I hope Burns and Co. do a bang-up job with their WWII documentary.
And just tell the truth of what happened.
That’s the best way to telling a great history.
Because people realize “Hey, these are real, human, fallible people
that accomplished this task...the sort of thing that the ancients
would usually attribute to a “g-d” or mythic figure.
And I hope some day Burns And Co. will do a BIG special on the American
Revolution (I don’t think they have yet).
It would be great if they went on-site for many of the Revolutionary
Battles...even the ones that happened on what are now totally urban
sites in Boston, NYC, etc.

The Civil War, Baseball, Jazz — all excellent. If Michael Moore is the example of what a documentarian shouldn’t be, Ken Burns is nan example of what they should. If anyone can summarize WWII in a mere 14 hours, Burns is that man. I’ve set the DVR to record the series.
My one and only gripe with Burns is that he gives, in my view, too much weight to the “color line” as the main thread in American history. In the Cilvil War, Baseball and Jazz, the main theme is always race. And black folks certainly did a lot of hard work for little credit during WWII — it’s a story that needs telling. But its not the only, or even the main, story. I hope Burns keeps it in perspective.

Exactly, my dad liked to tell people he flew whiskey and nurses; that is if he told anyone anything until he got a lot older. They didn’t talk much about that war. And he wouldn’t eat rice for the rest of his life.

And to add to it; the fog was so thick the odds you were going to run into the mountains.

Although VERY unlikely, that wouldn't be impossible.
My brother, in the late 1980s/early 1990s worked with a guy in
a lab at the U. Minnesota med school.
Every summer the guy would take a vacation to Germany to visit
his grandfather...who had been in the SS during WWII.

I forgot like an idiot to thank you for recognizing my Dad.
Thank you so much and thank you so much for yours.
The weinies out there wouldn’t have free speech if it weren’t for them and sadly, they know it.

Although I am not sure if my dad will make it into any of the footage I will bet that my FRiends Uncle John will. His name is John McGuire, he lived in Nutley NJ.
He got into one of the most famous photos of the war in Europe. Standing next to General Eisenhower just prior to the 101st taking off for Normandy.

It’s there, just look harder. For instance in his series on Jazz, except for his piece on Benny Goodman, no other white Jazz artists were profiled and he gave way too much leeway to the no talent Marsalis Brothers. This by the way comes from a number of Jazz and Big Band players who did watch that piece.
I will stand by my remarks. I don’t like Burns or his slant on history.

fk - did your Dad give you any “short snorters”? My uncle gave me a string of six or seven Chinese bills taped together signed by his flight crews. He was a navigator on C-46’s. I was only seven when he returned from The War. When his son was old enough to appreciate them, I gave them to him and then he to his sons in the same manner.

My dad lacked 2 1/2 years of seeing his oldest grandson graduating from High School, but I have NO doubt that he was there for the ceremony....
