Interesting idea but the tone of the report suggests the vice president has the authority to greenlight such undertakings.

This is news ???? Cheney MIGHT have THOUGHT ABOUT ...

One hopes our leaders think over every possible course of action.

... but I know this story is a lie because I have it from very reliable sources that Conservatives are closed minded, dogmatic, genetically incapable of considering alternatives or assimilating new information, ... it's even been proven in laboratory experiments ...

Haaretz has twisted the story as it was originally reported. Last week Salon reported the following:

One member of Cheney's national security staff, David Wurmser, worried out loud that Cheney felt that his wing was "losing the policy argument on Iran" inside the administration -- and that they might need to "end run" the president with scenarios that may narrow his choices. The option that Wurmser allegedly discussed was nudging Israel to launch a low-yield cruise missile strike against the Natanz nuclear reactor in Iran, thus "hopefully" prompting a military reaction by Tehran against U.S. forces in Iraq and the Gulf.

When queried about Wurmser's alleged comments, a senior Bush administration official told the New York Times, "The vice president is not necessarily responsible for every single thing that comes out of the mouth of every single member of his staff."

You can see here that Salon story is vague as to where the idea originated, but it sounds more as if it was Wurmser's idea--something that he presented to Cheney to "mull over."

Haaretz makes it sound like Cheney was the mastermind. The question is whether Newsweak spun it this way too, when it is not clear at all that this is the case.

An entire news article about something the Vice President "may have mulled".

Journalism has gone beyond self-parody.

Citing two unnamed sources the magazine called knowledgeable,

What happened to anonymous?

Same old liberal media spewing lies about President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

“may have mulled”.?

Sounds like contingency planning if you ask me — and that kind of planning is absolutely necessary.

Ya gotta know yer source. This is a left-wing Israeli source. Only two major errors here. 1) Congress gave the authority to act militarily to President Bush, not Vice President Cheney. And, 2) Israel has made if crystal clear that it will not cede its autonomy to act against Iran and its potential nuclear program to anyone, including the US.

Then, of course, this paper assumes that when and if Israel acts, it will do a sloppy job and need the US to pick up the pieces and clean up afterward. Other than those minor defects, this is a fine article. /sarcasm/

A military strike has been justified ever since 1979 with the kidnapping of U.S. citizens and Marines. The days of a free Iran will return when the current regime, military complex and infra-structure is demolished. It is long overdue. Why wait? It could be done while the “modern day” Hitler is speaking at Columbia University. One thing he’d notice when returning to the homeland, is that there would be “substantially more parking space.” The Great Oz Has Spoken.
