Newsweek Magazine reported Sunday that Vice President Richard Cheney may have considered a plan for Israeli missile strikes against an Iranian nuclear site in an effort to draw a military response from Iran, which could in turn spark a U.S. offensive against targets in the Islamic Republic. Citing two unnamed sources the magazine called knowledgeable, the magazine quoted David Wurmser, until last month Cheney's Middle East Advisor, as having told a small group of people that "Cheney had been mulling the idea of pushing for limited Israeli missile strikes against the Iranian nuclear site at Natanz - and perhaps other sites - in order to provoke Tehran into lashing out." According to the report, "The Iranian reaction would then give Washington a pretext to launch strikes against military and nuclear targets in Iran"...

Sounds like an EXCELLENT plan!! Cheney is the man.
Bulls**t.
Cheney in 2008!!!
Cheney, you magnificent bastard!
Yeah, and Hillary may have slept with Arafat.
Interesting idea but the tone of the report suggests the vice president has the authority to greenlight such undertakings.
One hopes our leaders think over every possible course of action.
... but I know this story is a lie because I have it from very reliable sources that Conservatives are closed minded, dogmatic, genetically incapable of considering alternatives or assimilating new information, ... it's even been proven in laboratory experiments ...
“Yeah, and Hillary may have slept with Arafat.”
Impossible,she doesn’t like men !!!
And he doesn’t like women.
Especially now !!!
One member of Cheney's national security staff, David Wurmser, worried out loud that Cheney felt that his wing was "losing the policy argument on Iran" inside the administration -- and that they might need to "end run" the president with scenarios that may narrow his choices. The option that Wurmser allegedly discussed was nudging Israel to launch a low-yield cruise missile strike against the Natanz nuclear reactor in Iran, thus "hopefully" prompting a military reaction by Tehran against U.S. forces in Iraq and the Gulf.
When queried about Wurmser's alleged comments, a senior Bush administration official told the New York Times, "The vice president is not necessarily responsible for every single thing that comes out of the mouth of every single member of his staff."
You can see here that Salon story is vague as to where the idea originated, but it sounds more as if it was Wurmser's idea--something that he presented to Cheney to "mull over."
Haaretz makes it sound like Cheney was the mastermind. The question is whether Newsweak spun it this way too, when it is not clear at all that this is the case.
Journalism has gone beyond self-parody.
What happened to anonymous?
Same old liberal media spewing lies about President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
PRESIDENT CHENEY is my DREAM!!
Thanks for THAT mental image.
Since this adminstration won't get in front of the cameran, the press can make whatever charges they want. Clinton had his people on the talk shows and talking to the press every week. This administration is . . . . {silent}
“may have mulled”.?
Sounds like contingency planning if you ask me — and that kind of planning is absolutely necessary.
