Two S.C. boys were in custody Saturday after being accused of stealing a fire truck from a manufacturing plant southeast of Rock Hill.
A neighbor called York County sheriff's deputies about 3:30 a.m. Saturday after hearing some loud noises at Seagrave Apparatus on Lesslie Highway, Sgt. Phillip Jamison said. The company designs and builds fire and rescue equipment.
Jamison said the boys apparently scaled a fence around the property. It's unclear how they got the truck started, he said. But they used it and a chain to yank off a gate and drove away, he said.
Not long after the call from the neighbor, a deputy patrolling around Rock Hill High School saw a firetruck with its red lights swirling. But there was no fire.
"He was like, `Huh? What's that fire truck doing over there?' " Jamison said.
The deputy tried to approach the truck, but it took off out of the school parking lot and gave chase at speeds up to 80 mph, Jamison said.
Deputies and Rock Hill police chased the truck for several miles. They eventually stopped it on Anderson Road, a four-lane highway, using metal strips that flattened its tires. The boys jumped and ran but were caught by officers, Jamison said.
Their names were not released because they are 16 or younger, he said.
Damage to the property and truck is estimated at about $8,000. The boys face motor vehicle theft and damage-to-property charges, Jamison said.
ahhh....young boys...so immortal, indestructible...and stupid.
Heh, heh. Don’t think I ever knew anybody that stole a firetruck. But that run down to York getting fireworks across the line every year growing up was always fun ;) I would have thought kids down in Rock Hill would have had better sense. York kids maybe but Rock Hill was the big town down there. A firetruck?!
If I told the stupid stuff I/we did as kids, they might still come get me and lock me up....
Thats good stuff.
Too bad they have zero tolerance and doom these kids forever nowadays.....
Unless the parents have big $$$
I know a group of boys who would probably read this story and say “Man!! why didn’t we think of that?”

I was thinking the same thing. Sometimes you just gotta chuckle.
$8,000 in damage and nobody hurt? Not the end of the world. A week in juvy hall ought to be sufficient, as a damn good thrashing from their old man is probably not in the cards.
And they ought to be able to pay off their debt in six months or so of honest after-school work, which will do them a power of good.

Details, details...
Those kids are lucky they didn’t wreck the truck. Those things run $500k - $900k these days.
They’d end up with a lot of angry firemen chasing them with axes.
What an adventure!
I never actually knew who makes the things.
I always assumed it was Mack or Peterbilt or Caterpillar (maker of the Corrie-mizer).
Is the video on YouTube yet?
Someone give these two kids a big hose and scholarship. Thats impressive :)

( _ . /_ _ / . / _ . ) !
I knew a guy who saw a police helicopter sitting in a field with the rotors slowly spinning and no one around. He said he got in and started playing around with the controls. Got a couple feet off the ground and saw cops running at him from all directions. He apparently landed it with no damage.
