Israelis seized nuclear material in Syrian raid

Israeli commandos seized nuclear material of North Korean origin during a daring raid on a secret military site in Syria before Israel bombed it this month, according to informed sources in Washington and Jerusalem.
The attack was launched with American approval on September 6 after Washington was shown evidence the material was nuclear related, the well-placed sources say.
They confirmed that samples taken from Syria for testing had been identified as North Korean. This raised fears that Syria might have joined North Korea and Iran in seeking to acquire nuclear weapons.
Israeli special forces had been gathering intelligence for several months in Syria, according to Israeli sources. They located the nuclear material at a compound near Dayr az-Zwar in the north.
Evidence that North Korean personnel were at the site is said to have been shared with President George W Bush over the summer. A senior American source said the administration sought proof of nuclear-related activities before giving the attack its blessing.
Diplomats in North Korea and China believe a number of North Koreans were killed in the strike, based on reports reaching Asian governments about conversations between Chinese and North Korean officials.
Syrian officials flew to Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, last week, reinforcing the view that the two nations were coordinating their response.

Of course it’s all prognostication, but I don’t see us in Iraq much past 2009.
It’s not about safety any more. Syria, if we are to believe the reports, had nuclear material from North Korea in-country.

There are plenty of places that terror is growing. That is the stated position of the folks in Iraq - they are coming from out-of-country - and we can do nothing about it.
There is nothing stopping them from coming to Europe or the US or anywhere else. So it’s not about safety anymore, it’s about political face-saving.

Putting political face saving over national security is surely a possibility. If we allow it to happen then the results will be disastrous.

Well, I mean, I’m not a pilot and I’m in the Army, so I don’t really know. But I was told the Navy is far and above the best at what they do in the world, that truly no one comes close. The Air Force, I was told, specializes in research and development. Our Army, compared to others, isn’t all that much better than some of the others in world. Some of our training is kind of soft, and so are some of its soldiers (I speak from personal experience), although we have the best technology, best NCO corps, and probably some very good tactics. Although, when it comes down to it, armies facing off have the least amount to do with technology than any other branch. It’s groups of men trying to kill each other with roughly similar weapons. Yes, we have the definite technological edge, but on the ground there will be situations where it will not matter as much, and then it will come down to training, tactics, and strength.
Here we have people (Arabs) who think dogs are an unclean animal doing deals with people (Koreans) who prefer roast dog to just about anything in the world (except kimchi).
I can just see Assad telling Young Leader to "pass me an eyeball, please".
I wouldn’t necessarily believe Iran has it. Just consider the Syrian site part of their diversified nuclear installations. That’s my guess.

I don’t share your view on North Korea. It could have been nuclear fuel or nuclear components for building a bomb. We just don’t know those details. We know that it probably had some nuclear activities on this location. That the Syrian won’t talk about it lends itself to that level of seriousness.
