Former Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu tried to kill himself "by taking pills ... a lot of them," as he fled by train from sentencing on a theft charge from the 1990s, his attorney said today.
"I think the pressure was enormous," attorney James Brosnahan said after a disheveled and shackled Hsu appeared briefly in a Redwood City courtroom following his extradition back to California from Colorado.
Hsu is facing up to a three years in prison after pleading no contest in 1992 to one count of grand theft for a $1 million Ponzi scheme, in which early investors are repaid with money from subsequent investors, who typically lose their funds when the scheme collapses. He is being held without bail.
His attorney now says Hsu will seek to withdraw that plea and have the charge dismissed or the case brought to trial. Brosnahan also asked that the $2 million bail that Hsu forfeited when he skipped a Sept. 5 court date in Redwood City and boarded Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr be returned to him.
Hsu was taken off the train in Grand Junction, Colo., and arrested after fellow passengers reported that he was behaving erratically. He was hospitalized for several days with an ailment that has never been fully explained.
Brosnahan said today in court that while on the train, Hsu had taken large quantities of what were probably sleeping pills in a suicide attempt.

Does this “botched suicide” statement mean the defense has given up the explanation that Hsu thought he was getting on BART to a light rail to the court house to surrender himself - when he discovered that he had accidentally gotten on an AmTrack cross country train headed for Chicago?

Brosnahan attacked that confession Friday because it came while he “was still under the influence of the pills he was taking.” It was also given without a lawyer present, he said.
“It is a legal scandal,” Brosnahan said.

Hillary could show up in the senate chambers carrying the head of Norman Hsu and it wouldn't affect her vote totals. (It might actually increase her vote among the base.)
His lawyer is James Brosnahan, an old lefty lawyer, most recently famous for being John Walker Lindh's lawyer (Taliban Johnny.) You may remember that Brosnahan tried to portray Taliban Johnny as crazy at first too. Then the portrayal switched to poor little Johnny being in such pain from being shot, tortured, deprived, confused, etc. that he didn't know what he was saying. Before Brosnahan was Taliban Johnny's attorney, he was one of the attorneys who converged on Miami to argue thatgore really won the 2000 election. Before that, Brosnahan was insturmental in pulling the election eve indictment of Cap Weinberger. Some years before that, Brosnahan gave a deposition in an attempt to prevent Rehnquist from being named Chief Justice of the Supreme Court -- or being named to the court at all -- I don't remember which. Brosnahan has a long history in leftist politics. he is also a long time and regular donor to Democrat causes and candidates.
