Rudy Giuliani told the National Rifle Association Friday that his own views on gun control have evolved in part due to the Sept. 11 attacks, which he said highlighted the importance of the Second Amendment right of allowing law-abiding citizens to carry guns.
Facing a group that he once likened to "extremists," Giuliani sought to temper his past strong support for national gun control laws by saying he could no longer support a lawsuit he filed as New York mayor in 2000, which was designed to hold gun-makers liable for gun violence.
Giuliani said "there have been subsequent intervening events -- Sept. 11 -- which casts somewhat of a different light on the Second Amendment and Second Amendment rights. It doesn't change the fundamental rights, but maybe it highlights the necessity for them more."
Giuliani has built his presidential campaign on convincing Republicans that his performance after the Sept. 11 attacks shows he is the strong leader America needs -- but it was the first time he had linked his personal views on gun control to the terror attacks.
The lawsuit -- which ironically was being debated in a New York appeals court Friday as well -- was one of the sharpest points of disagreement between Giuliani and the gunrights lobby, which he criticized as President Bill Clinton's leading Republican ally in pushing for a national assault weapons ban.
Giuliani rival John McCain also criticized the former mayor's tactics Friday, calling it a "particularly devious effort to use lawsuits to bankrupt our great manufacturers. A number of big-city mayors decided it was more important to blame the manufacturers of a legal product than it was to control crime in their own cities."
Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson also addressed the meeting of about 400 NRA members, winning by far the...

More like John Kerry in an orange jump suit pretending to be for gun rights.
Why anyone would believe RINO Rudy is beyond my ability to comprehend.
So he had a come to Jesus moment, eh? Then we elect him, and like baby Bush on spending and borders, he does the Sarah Brady switcheroo. No thanks.
If I could trust him with my guns, I wouldn’t mind him for president. I think he would be an effetiver leader. But I don’t.
Thanks, but no thanks. I’ll stick with Tommy Gun for president in 2008. Rudy, if you’ve truly come to Jesus over guns, you have the next 8 years to prove it and I’ll be happy to vote for you in 2016.
This statement is at the heart of the way this ignorant, gun grabbing, New York City politician thinks. There is no law anywhere in the U.S. that an automobile be registered if you dont intend to drive it on public roads. There are no restrictions on who may buy or drive one either, no license or test is required as long as it is kept on private property. Yet owning an automobile is not a right under the Constitution. But owning a gun is a right, yet we are restricted by a number of unjust laws, restrictions, and licenses restricting that right.
Giuliani is just another lying, gun grabbing, big city politician with no respect for the Constitution of this land who will say, or do anything to get elected.
No, not Saul: this is a Liberal Yankee trying to run as a Conservative.
Think Lincoln Chaffee, Arlen Specter, Olympia Snowe, et al.
Where’s that picture of him in a dress?
It would make more sense than the idea of Rudy carrying a gun - or letting you or me own one.
How about "jellyfish?"
Jellyfish aren't so easily offended, even at being compared to Rudy.
Thanks for the ping!
jellyfish...
Yeah, that’ll do
guffaw
Well then there now - that about covers it.
(snicker)
Uh-huh. Have your BATF agent call my BATF agent and let’s do lunch sometime...

Past actions are a better indication of future actions than current words. Words are cheap, promises easily ignored once a politician has power.
Thanks for the links.
I'll take a gander on the pander (sorry - couldn't resist!). Otherwise, he would have spoken out for gun rights on 9/12, rather than waiting until he had real Republicans to answer to and not just the NYC variety.
From NR today, grades on our guys.
The Quick Read on How The NRA Crowd Liked The Candidates
Basing my grades entirely on crowd reactions at todays NRA Celebration of American Values, Id grade McCain B+, Thompson A, Rudy B+, Huckabee A+. I will give Romney and Richardson C+s for their video presentations - theyre well done for what they are, but no video can command an audiences attention the way a candidate in the flesh can. Duncan Hunter is scheduled to appear by video later today. Newt Gingrich is also expected to appear, in person, but unless he gets his $30 million by November, hes not in.

So that's our choice?
Nice try Rudy, but gun owners are not the dumb hicks you think they are.
You know, it’s 1 in the morning, so forgive me if I only stick around long enough to answer 1 or 2 posts, but I gotta tell ya, guys:
You’re getting yourselves all in a tizzy, and if our least-desireable pubbie gets nominated, then you’re gonna pout and make Hillary President and Bubba VP(unofficially). Indirectly, you will hang our boys in Iraq out to dry and do a good decade’s worth of damage to the military ala Carter. I hope, no, I PRAY that this is all just part of our spirited debate that we, unlike the RATS, have in our primary.
But if you Blue Falcons don’t come together once we have a nominee, I’ll be pissed. Personally, I like Hunter. But damn-it: I’ll vote for any of the current crop of republicans (yes, even our own Howard Dean: Ron Paul) before I let the Murthas, Pelosis, Clintons and Reids have their way with us. You bastards better have our 6 regardless of who our nominee is.
That is all.
