NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- About one million Chinese-made, Simplicity brand cribs are being recalled after three infants died and seven were trapped when the drop side of cribs detached causing a dangerous gap, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Failures in the crib's drop side are due to a combination of hardware and design flaws that allow consumers to unintentionally install the drop side upside down. This installation could weaken the hardware and cause the drop side to detach from the crib, creating a gap that could lead to the entrapment and suffocation of infants.

The cribs, which were made in China, were sold in department stores, children’s stores and mass merchandisers nationwide from January 1998 through May 2007 for between $100 and $300.
The affected cribs include the following models: Aspen 3 in 1, Aspen 4 in 1, Nursery-in-a-Box, Crib N Changer Combo, Chelsea and Pooh 4 in 1. The recall also involves Simplicity cribs Aspen 3 in 1, Ultra 3 in 1, Ultra 4 in 1, Ultra 5 in 1, Whitney and the Trio using the Graco logo.
The recalled cribs have the model numbers 4600, 4605, 4705, 5000, 8000, 8324, 8800, 8740, 8910, 8994, 8050, 8750, 8760, and 8996, which can be found on the envelope attached to the mattress support and on the label attached to the headboard.
Wonder if there will be an apology forthcoming TO China for the dead babies?
Mattel apologizes to China for toy recalls
China doesn’t give a crap about our dead babies, they kill enough of their own every day....
If people would read the article, they’d see the defect is due to design, not production.
Earnings per share for a lot of companies who invested in Chinese goods are beginning to droop.
It still lacks the “this side up” sticker.
“a combination of hardware and design flaws that allow consumers to unintentionally install the drop side upside down. This installation could weaken the hardware and cause the drop side to detach from the crib, “
So, designed poorly by an American company, and assembled incorrectly by a parent who was unable to follow the assembly instructions, also undoubtedly written here. I don’t think this one is China’s fault at all.
What is that?
Better yank this thread, the Chicoms may sell their dollars...
As do we.
It was a design flaw, however if they would have bothered with product testing....
This will only get worse unless someone - anyone - steps up to the plate and says “No more imports from China of anything”.
It’s possible the instructions weren’t written by the American, but most likely, they were. Tried to do a search, and couldn’t find that model’s instructions. But the illustrations, and everything else would have to be completely wrong. And I doubt that!
“Two incidents were also reported involving cribs with drop-sides that were correctly installed, though the upside down installation greatly increases the risk of failure, the commission says.”
Again, designed here. Simply manufactured to American specs by the Chinese. I do not think they are at fault!
There’s only so much “what if the customer is an idiot” stuff you can do in product testing. If it works when put together properly that’s generally enough. Probably the biggest hit I’d give the product testers on this is they didn’t figure out there was an improper way of putting it together that would actually function, the best designs can’t be put together wrong.
Ohhhhh.
Thanks.
