Highway checkpoint asks drivers for blood, saliva

Motorists in Colorado are expressing outrage over a weekend stunt in Gilpin County, about an hour's drive west of Denver, where highway checkpoints were set up so a private organization could ask for samples of blood and saliva.

"I don't think they're authorized to do what they're doing, and I view it as a gross violation of law-enforcement protocol," Roberto Sequeira, 51, told reporters for the Denver Post.

He said he and his wife were "detained" for about 15 minutes even after they protested they wanted to get home because of a sleepy child in their car.

Sheriff's officials were apologizing after they helped set up and run five separate checkpoints over the weekend.

They said workers for the Institute for Research and Evaluation were overly persistent in their demands of innocent travelers.

"It was like a telemarketer that you couldn't hang up on," Undersheriff John Bayne told the newspaper.

Sgt. Bob Enney said the deputies' assistance to the organization involved stopping motorists at the sites along Colorado Highway 119 for "surveys" on any drug or alcohol use. Surveyors also requested that motorists submit to breath, blood and saliva tests.

Enney said several hundred motorists were tested, and some later complained.

Sequeira said he repeatedly asked if the questioners were law enforcement officials and said he was not interested in participating in the study, but still was not given clearance to leave.

He told the newspaper that he and his family were approached by two researchers, and even after his repeated refusals, officials offered his wife, who was driving, $100 to get the couple to take part in a breath test.

The research firm, Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, which was working under the auspices of two federal agencies, is currently conducting an internal investigation of the incident in Colorado.

These people need to be cut off at the wallet !

US tax dollars are being used by these fascists

Why did the police department even remotely entertain the idea of doing this “research”? Something stinks here, big time. This might be a “follow the money” deal. If these cops were asked to load people on flatbed trucks they probably would do it.

They do that here too. They startled the hell out of the one who must be obeyed at a stop light last year walking up to her car wearing a tee-shirt, hip waders, carrying a boot he wanted her to put cash into. Needless to say, by the time she composed herself enough to remember she had a wallet, the light changed and the traffic started moving.

Not surprising, in Gilpin. I endured the place for 9 months in 2001. It’s a tiny county, and most of its residents believe Vladimir Lenin was a right wingnut

Gilpin County is for all those Boulder folk who swear CU sold out and went mainstream.

Heavy-handed tactics like these are no surprise, nosiree.

AH! Well, then the people involved should go to the police station and file a criminal report. I had to do that once against a guy that assaulted me while claiming to be a police man. I took it to court, won and he lost his job.

If it weren’t for the whole civil liberties thing, this actually sound like a good way to get accurate data on drug usage by drivers.

Hell, why stop there? Why not require everyone to take a test before collecting a tax refund. Anything's fair when it comes to drugs. Just be sure to exempt Congress, judges and all law enforcement officers (except Border Patrol, or course).

The proper answer to a ridiculous request like this is, “No. Now move or be run over.”

That's my inclination, too, but it would probably get you guns in your face, a tazing and a personal tour of the county lockup. These were real deputies and you'd better respect their authoritay, or else.

They don’t “descend” on the highway and beg for money. They have the empty boot fund raiser. Check it out.

Whoever sent these deputies out to man these ‘survey’ checkpoints should be severely reprimanded.
