DOVER, Del. - Two students were shot at Delaware State University early Friday and the campus was locked down as police searched for a gunman, officials said. Classes were canceled for the day. A male student was hospitalized in stable condition, and a female student was hospitalized with injuries that are considered serious, according to a news release on the university's Web site. "They could be potentially life-threatening," university spokesman Carlos Holmes said. Police hoped to find out more information once the victims were able to talk. "We haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, and that's probably a big reason why the suspect is still at large," Holmes told KYW-TV of Philadelphia. The students were shot near Memorial Hall around 1 a.m., the news release said. Students were instructed to stay in their residence halls until further notice, and nonessential university employees were told not to report to work. At the university's main entrance, swing-arm gates were down to prevent people from driving onto campus. A historically black college founded in 1890 as the State College for Colored Students, Delaware State had about 3,600 students from 38 states and 31 countries in 2006. The 400-acre campus was surrounded Friday by groups of recreational vehicles belonging to NASCAR fans in town for this weekend's races at the Dover Downs Speedway.

Are students at Delaware colleges allowed to pack heat on campus?
Hmmmm. I wonder if the perp also rode along with the crowd.
The thing about something like a NASCAR race is hat it follows a schedule. All those reporters aren't on-call 24/7. At 1 am, I was probably wrong when I said they were home in bed -- they were out on the town racking up expense reoirts that they'd figure out how to justify later.
A planned, scheduled event is to the news business what a big convention is to any other business. You go to spend 6 or 7 hours on the clock, which leaves 17 or 18 of unscheduled time. You might want to sleep for a few of those. Otherwise, it's an extended meet-and-greet.
I knew folks who were in the press corps in Kuwait in 2003. You couldn't bring liquor into Kuwait legally. So every camera crew had a bottle of "Windex" -- needed to clean the lenses, so it could breeze through customs with nary a question -- that was, in fact, grain alcohol with blue food coloring. When news got slow, the newsies wold pool their resources in one hotel suite and bust out the blue shooters.
I love these Cable News morons. “The shooting is very similiar to the Va Tech shootings,...except that only two people were shot...” Yeah, and the VA. Tech shooting killed 30 plus, the shooter was an Asian psycho, etc., etc.
My immediate reaction would be to answer no, unless they are off-duty LEOs taking courses. Although they have been eaed somewhat in recent years, getting a concealed carry permit in Delaware has been a historically complicated process.
I’m quite familiar with events like NASCAR as it pertains to the news media.........I was a reporter in Dover for several years, in fact the streaming audio someone linked to up thread isfrom the station I used to work for.
About the only place in town they would be racking up expenses at 1am would be in Denny’s or in the casino at the track.........last call in the bars is 12:45.
See, these NASCAR fans, with their missing teeth and guns, they just break and kill everything. If this event wasn't happening no students would have been hurt. /mainstream media
The answer would be “NO”.
Even if you have a DE CCW.
State law prohibits the carry on School property.
Thanks, I was just about to go back and re-answer the question, after having done some more reading.
As my husband said about 7am, the shooter is probably long in Philly by now. My initial reaction was he/she probably just meandred across 13 to Dover Downs and got lost in the crowd........hubby looked at me as if I had 3 heads........
This is the one where the illegal immigrant was also suspected of trying to rape a child of 5.
Jeez. Yankees and their blue laws. I have to confess that I've never been out drinking in Delaware, aside from a beer at a Blue Rocks game -- is it one of those states that allows bars and liquor stores to share the same premises, so you can buy a bottle "for the road?"
I've never been to a NASCAR race. My dad went to one, exactly one, and he counts it among the most miserable experiences of his life. He was at Daytona, and overdid the tailgating the night before. So Dad had a blistering hangover, and of course, NASCAR races are INCREDIBLY FREAKING LOUD. Dad and his friends had infield seats, so there was no escape.
Quick! Someone set up a bank of microphones for the socialists, so they can demand to ban guns again.
I have NEVER been to a NASCAR race, in fact in the 21 years I lived in Dover and its environs, most race weekends we headed south to get out of town and away from the traffic.
Loud is an understantement. We lived 5 miles south of DD, on the same side of the highway, if I left my back door open I could hear the cars and crowds........so I can only imagine what it would sound like at the track, let alone the infield.

Brisk pace of killings resumes
City officials struggle for relief as 8 more die within three days

A student of Morgan State University, a historically black college in Baltimore was shot in broad daylight last week, for no apparent reason.
Of course, it was only one of six murders last weekend, so the report of this one did not rate its own article.
I wonder if there is crazy person at large on a serial shooting spree?
The only reason this is getting national attention is because the national media is all there for NASCAR, and nothing very interesting normally happens in Dover.
Delaware State is a little more ethic than say the University of Delaware.
That should be “ethnic”.
We only bring this up to infer that obviously the shooter was a redneck, backwater bubba....
BZZZZZZZZT WRONG.
It is a relevent fact because the population of Dover is currently about triple it's normal pop. because of the influx of race fans this week. This is only going to make the job of LEOs even more difficult trying to track down the shooter.
“My initial reaction was he/she probably just meandred across 13 to Dover Downs and got lost in the crowd...”
As I drove to work this am, looking at the (literally) thousands of trailers that are across the street (in every direction) this was my initial thought as well.
Driving up Rt. 13 a few minutes ago, Best Buy parking lot (immediately across from DSU) is closed to all except MSM traffic.
Lot is mostly full, BTW.
I read about the Best Buy lot.
The News Journal website is doig a very good job with updates.........as much as it pains me to compliment them.
The national media being in Dover for the race is really the only reason this is getting coverage outside the immediate area.
