Fred Thompson Issues Stern Statement on Iranian Leader Ahmadinejad

Fred Thompson has issued this stern statement regarding Iranian Leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, his upcoming visit to the United Nations, and what we must do regarding the threat Iran poses:

Dallas, TX - Senator Fred Thompson issued the following statement today from Dallas, Texas regarding Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's upcoming visit to the United States and further called upon the UN Security Council to impose economic sanctions on the terrorist state:

"Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, president of the world's premier terrorist state, is speaking before the United Nations next week. He has also asked to visit Ground Zero. If I were President of the United States none of this would have been an issue--I wouldn't have let him into the country in the first place.

"It's time for the world to finally send a stern message to Iran. Ahmadinejad has called for the destruction of Israel, is supporting terrorist groups throughout the Middle East, and is responsible for supplying weapons to extremists who are killing US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. And with Iran's ongoing pursuit of nuclear weapons and development of long-range missiles, that country is a threat not only to the region and our allies, but to the entire free world. It's time for the United Nations to take more serious action against this terror regime.

"The Security Council needs to begin placing comprehensive, multilateral sanctions on Iran's economy, to include banning foreign investment, stopping export credits to companies doing business there, and prohibiting any business dealings with Iran's Revolutionary Guard. Iranian banks should be denied access to international banking and financial institutions, and World Bank loans should be suspended. All arms sales to Iran need to be halted. And travel by Iranian officials should be stopped and their assets frozen. Cutting off Iranian access to refined gas imports will certainly get Tehran's attention and cause them to reconsider their priorities. If the UN can't reach agreement on these measures due to continued Russian, Chinese or others' intransigence, then we need to work directly with our allies and go around the UN roadblock.

"The international community has been negotiating with Iran for more than four years to no avail in seeking to halt the mullahs' nuclear program. I believe strongly in diplomacy, but it has its limits, especially when the other side is made up of extremists. If we don't get serious and act now--before they build atomic weapons--the stakes will be even higher, and our hand much weaker. The United States and its allies cannot afford to let that happen. As president, I certainly will not."

“Yah know, Fred, it ain’t up to you. According to a treaty we signed when they planted the UN in New York we have to let him in. And according to the same treaty, the UN headquarters stays in New York unless they decide to move it. So if you really want to be president I suggest you brush up on the law a little bit before you make promises you can’t keep.”

Perhaps Pres. Fred couldn’t keep the guy out, but he, sure as Allah, could make ImaNutJob very uncomfortable while on his visit to the U.S.

I opt for an “accidental” mechanical failure. ;-)

It’s more sneaky and fun that way.

I just wish more people would get a chance to listen to Duncan Hunter...and wish Congressman Hunter would have enough backing to be heard and voted for. Great guy. Superior core values.

He technically can, as he has to enter the US first, and he CAN keep him from entering the US via an airport.

Note that Ahminajihad needs a US Visa to travel from the airport to the UN. It is conceiveable that he could go to the UN and stay within the UN facility, IF he were to take a chopper from a ship to the roof of the UN, without a visa, but genearlly they need US visas for a Head of State and for the accompanying security team.

I am surprised he got those visas for he would be unlikely to pass a Homeland Security check, after his ravings about bombing Israel, and with the recent intelligence on Irans supply of Iranian arsenal marked ordnance to Islamofascists in Iraq. This makes me believe that he is being set up for a kidnapping or perhaps a Mossad hit. That would be quite fitting actually, to have him kidnapped and held ransom, and he being decapitated on video, just as his scions have done to numerous Westerners.

"Does a U.S. president have the authority to bar a head of state from a member nation coming to the UNN?"

The State Deparment can deny ANYONE a visa to visit here, if they wish. In fact, the US government can boot the entire UN building from US soil, (how I wish they would). But that bloody murderer of US troops in Iraq, Ahmadinejad, apparently isn't a seemly enough character for Bush to keep off US soil. I'm tired of this stuff, America has become the world's premiere creampuff. Ahmadinejad isn't a typical head of state, he's a terrorist, in charge of a terrorist nation.

Does a U.S. president have the authority to bar a head of state from a member nation coming to the UN?

I think not.

I'd be curious to find out if Fred made the statement knowing that, or if he doesn't know the answer.

Wow - sounds like a Tom Clancy book. Love it!

I dunno - we've let in scumbags like Arafat, Castro, Chavez, etc. The political fallout would be enormous around the world.

Yes, but none of thoese people are the head of the #1 state sponsor of terrorism while we're in a "War on Terror". And they are directly engaging in acts of war against our troops in Iraq. The case could easily be made, in my opinion.

"Yah know, Fred, it ain't up to you. According to a treaty we signed when they planted the UN in New York we have to let him in."

Last time I checked every foreignor needs a visa to come here. Visas can be denied by the State Department for minor reasons, let alone for being a terrorist head of state who is directly responsible for the murder of dozens and dozens of US troops.

Another candidate who disagrees with you is Mitt Romney. Here is what he had to say recently:
"I call on the United Nations to revoke any invitation to President Ahmadinejad to address the General Assembly," Romney wrote in a letter---- "If President Ahmadinejad sets foot in the United States, he should be handed an indictment under the Genocide Convention," Romney wrote.

I'm tired of it too. Our troops are putting their lives on the line every day, not just in Iraq and Afghanistan, but in many other hellholes all over the world, only to be betrayed by our politicians.

Wasn’t it a while back that Castro spoke at the U.N.? I do remember some controversy about allowing him in, it seemed that we didn’t have to allow him a visa and could have kept him out.

Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks.

"I don’t think the other Republican candidates are going to cut him a break on this statement. If even someone like me, a seasoned citizen retired lady knows that he can’t bar Ahmanutjob fromn the U.N., Fred should know it"

Not quite true. Mitt Romney already said that he'd have Ahmadinejad handed a warrant for his arrest, for genocide, under the Geneva Conventions, if he were President and Ahmadinajad set foot on US soil. Also, the State Department could certainly refuse to issue a visa to a dangerous terrorist such as Ahmadickinawad.

US government granted visa to M.Ahmedinejad through embassy in Bern. Iranian President M. Ahmedinejad will stay in New York for two days and will be accompanied by high-level officials. A senior State Department official tells the waiver will be granted because of the limited nature of his visit. Ahmadinejad won’t be allowed to travel more than 25 miles beyond U.N. headquarters in New York City.
http://en.apa.az/news.php?id=35324

(this is probably accurate.....seems like I recall something similar being said last time......but a limit of 25 miles is not the same as anywhere he wishes within 25 miles, I hope.....seems to me his “rights” would be limited to the UN grounds, the Iranian interest here in lieu of an embassy)

“The Islamic Republic of Iran does not have its own embassy in Washington, though it does have a permanent mission to the United Nations in New York City”

I think some people thought having the UN in New York would allow the US to control the UN but all they did was bring a nest of vipers and spies into the biggest financial and commercial city of the US. Thus the evil regimes have had access to money and American politicians on a scale impossible if they would have had to travel individually .Nor could the press and electorate fail to notice certain figures making too many trips to foreign cities. In short,we was had!
