Netanyahu confirms IAF carried out raid in Syria

In what appears to be the first confirmation by a senior politician of foreign media reports of an Israeli operation in Syria two weeks ago, opposition leader MK Benjamin Netanyahu told Channel One television last night that he was party to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's decision.

In an interview with Channel One news anchor Haim Yavin, Netanyahu said that he was briefed on Olmert's decision to carry out an operation in Syria, gave him his backing and congratulated him.

"When the prime minister takes action in important and necessary matters, and generally when the government is doing things for the security of Israel, I give it my endorsement," he said. "I was party to this matter, I must say, from the first minute and I gave it my backing, but it is still too early to discuss this subject."

Meanwhile, publications of the Syrian Reform Party, an opposition group representing the oppressed Assyrian minority in Syria, recently reprinted a story originally published in the Kuwaiti daily Al-Siyasa in December 2006, which quoted European intelligence sources as saying that Syria is conducting “an advanced nuclear program” in Hasakah, a province in northeastern Syria.

The report quoted British sources as having identified Colonel Maher Assad, a relative of Syrian President Bashar Assad, and Rami Mahmouf as the two people “supervising” the project.

According to the report in Al-Siyasa, the Syrian nuclear program used Iraqi materials smuggled by Saddam Hussein’s sons prior to the American invasion of Iraq in March, 2003.

Some 60 Iraqi scientists, along with Iranian and former Soviet experts, “are contributing to the Syrian nuclear program,” according to the British sources quoted in the report.

...["which quoted European intelligence sources as saying that Syria is conducting “an advanced nuclear program”]

Who are the European intelligence sources?

Unless I missed something, I don’t think the NKs really succeeded in detonating a nuke. IIRC, the test didn’t show signs of being a serious nuclear explosion (less than a kiloton).

To me, combined with the proven incompetence of their ballistic missile program, this test doesn’t qualify as a success. I don’t know about Iran, but I definitely don’t see Syria attacking Israel, at least directly ala ‘73. I wouldn’t say Syria has crickets, but they do have the proverbial ‘spitballs’ due to the demise of the USSR.

Any Israelis up right now? When does Benjamin Netanyahu become prime minister again? Your current PM is a Jimmy Carter-style loser, from what I’ve seen.

I particlarly liked this part:

According to a report in this week’s London-based Sunday Times, for example, an Israeli source said the supposed Israel Air Force strike came in the wake of intelligence reports suggesting Syria was been planning a “devastating surprise” for Israel.

Yeah, devastating, alright-for Syria!

Hey, I am assured by John Kerry and a host of Democrats that this stuff doesn't exist. Boy, I feel safer!

I love Bebe, but this time (first time) I disagree with him. He should have kept his mouth shut and let the action continue speaking for it self.

I like Bebe too. My daughter would probably vote for him. Best this was kept in silence but I wonder if possibly America was pushig too hard to show the trtu. Israel is not allowed to breath unless America says so it seems. Note the war vs Hizbollah with a timeline and the loonie left attempting timelines in the iraqi war. Pathetic attepmts to make war some danged game one can push aside to to eat latkes.
