Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said GW Bush would like some sort of universal health care before the end of his term.
Leavitt stated that Bush will veto a Democratic plan that would add $35 billion in taxpayer subsidies to the Children's Health Insurance Program.... Leavitt also stated that Bush will urge Congress to search for a way to ensure coverage for all Americans.
"He'd like to see the larger debate begin," Leavitt said. "The very best opportunity we have may well be in the next 15 months."

Good points all. Unfortunately, most proposals coming from both sides of the partisan aisle involve more of the very things — subsidies, price-fixing, rationing, etc. — that caused this problem in the first place.
Honestly, Mitt has a lot of really great conservative ideas. Mitt, like most Republican politicians has been misquoted and misrepresented. I believe its because if Mitt actually gets a chance to stand alone he could very likely win hearts and minds. Much like Mike Pence, the way the media (and Rinos) get rid of a conservatives with sound ideas as well as potential for public acceptance is to either black ball them (ignore) or misrepresent them. In Mitts case they have done both. It is my opinion that the press is trying to choose the GOP candidate. (note the comeback of McCain)
Out of curiosity, who do you lean towards for the GOP nomination?
You believe that because it is Bush who is offering a version of a universal health care plan that somehow this makes it a 'conservative' approach? PLEASE, there is no 'conservative approach' to instituting a socialist health care system. Bush's caving to socialist principles to obtain future Republican votes isn't exactly a 'conservative approach", at least not in my book. But then again, the Pres crossed over to the other side long ago.
Along that same line.....Where I live in Ohio is saturated with Democrats. Last month out County officials (Dems) pulled a publicity stunt to make people aware of how hard it is to exist on food stamps. The officials lived for a month on what the average food stamp recipient does, saying its hard to get nutritious meals on the low food stamp funding.
They are trying to get more $$$ for people on food stamps. i.e. buy more votes. I work in a store that takes food stamps, what they purchase is pop candy chips easter baskets energy drinks etc. They average about $12 a day in 100% junk food. Yet, here we have are tax and spend Democrat leaders trying to give these people more $$$~!! While the bias media helps with the daily barrage of sob stories. Its disgusting. (and sadly, its working)

I had an argument last night with some fellows about referring to Americans as “sheep”. After reading many of the chicken-little, hook-line-and-sinker responses to this un-sourced rant, I realize I owe those fellows an apology. Big time.

Never thought I’d agree with the “impeach Bush” set, but he keeps making the bumper sticker activists look more and more lucid with each pronouncement.
Then again maybe it’s a bit of reverse psychology strategery — creating an epic case of cognitive dissonance (Bush is a “moron,” universal healthcare scheme is undeniably good, but Bush supports it?) for the pop politics set.

I do not trust Bush with health care. Look what he’s doing to Tricare for our military. It’s a nightmare of increases that would leave alot of veterans without health care. He sucks.
I can’t wait for Bush to leave office.
It took me a minute to find this, this, on the White House website. Even if the truth lies somewhere in between, there's a whole lotta' assumptions flying around.

"Some form" weren't the operative words though, "universal health care" are. In any case, whenever a politician, whether President, Senate or Congress, enter a debate about our health care system with the intent of legislating a 'better system' through government intervention, you have the makings of socialism.
Our health care is the best in the world, bar none. It is affordable insurance that has become the problem. We should never have allowed the insurance companies to dictate and manage our health care, but once government enters the health care picture with federal cost controls and subsidies we'll end up with a system akin to the VA, or Europe; there will be a complete melt down of health care efficiency and timeliness. Only this won't be about standing in line for eternity to buy some stamps or mail a package, it will be about our own health and the health of our families.
I tend to look more to actual track record than sudden assertions of position. I also look at who was willing to walk the walk despite it being nominally adverse to their political health. Hunter again keeps firing on all conservative cylinders despite having been a Congressman in a heavily democrat district (70% last I heard).
I give Romney credit for faithfully suddenly having the "talk" down. And he is a potentially capable speaker. He should also weigh in on the DREAM [NIGHTMARE] Act. And the Law of the Sea Treaty also while he is at it.
But I am backing Hunter for the duration.

Just goes to show that folks inclined to distrust the President will latch onto any headline that will ‘prove’ their point, even if the headline is misleading. They apparently don’t bother reading the story, or doing any research into it themselves. BDS isn’t just for liberals or the media, anymore.
That link to the White House website answers a lot of questions. Since health insurance coverage is controlled by States, the idea of tax credits is the most the Fed. Govt. can do, barring socialized medicine. The President knows that socialized medicine will not work; he's just trying to find a solution for those who would LIKE to have health insurance, but find that it's not affordable, and also to reduce the numbers of people in the Medicare and Medicaid programs, since they are wasteful.
