NUKES IN SYRIA?
NY Post ^ | September 18, 2007 | Peter Brookes

WITH Congress' hearings on Iraq grabbing the nation's attention last week, hardly anyone took no tice of the news that Israel may have conducted a military air strike on a suspected nuclear facility in northern Syria.

Yes, that's right: a possible Syrian nuclear facility.

Originally, it was believed the early-September raid by Israeli fighters was against an Iranian weapons shipment crossing Syria en route to Lebanon, where Hezbollah is rearming at a feverish pace since its 2006 war with Israel.

But speculation on the nature of the Israeli mission into Syria has spread like wildfire - thanks to official and unofficial chatter about the strike's real target.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates refused to comment on the Sunday morning news shows. But late last week a senior State Department official involved in nuclear-nonproliferation issues told The Associated Press: "There are indicators that they [Syria] do have something going on there [at the facility that was struck by the Israelis]. We do know that there are a number of foreign technicians that have been in Syria."

The official added: "We do know that there may have been contact between Syria and some secret suppliers

I believe I read a story where we (USA) confirmed N. Korea nukes had been blown up in Syria by forces in Israel.

Isn’t this a wonderful world. Can’t we all just get along.

From the article;

“Naturally, all the suspects deny everything. Yet Syria’s been relatively unmiffed by the Israeli raid, further suggesting that something dubious is up.”

Not hearing all the usual, self-righteous rantings from the ME over this lead me to believe the same.

Are there any public sites that track radiation? Is there a public satellite, sniffer stations, etc.? Can we get a read from down-wind, say, in Iraq?

I guess that as soon as the IDF and Syrian quotes mentioning the "huge crater" left behind from the air strike has everyone thinking a nuke was touched off. Not only is that highly unlikely, but you'd think that if the facility had nuclear materials in it, for building dirty bombs or whatever, that high radiation levels would be present if such materials were scattered by the blast.

Most likely it's just a huge crater because a large amount of explosive materials were stock piled at the site. 50 tons of TNT would make a pretty big hole in the ground.

Those that pass for "Journalists" these days however, just can't grasp the concept that large amounts of explosives make large holes, and therefore begin to speculate as to what could have made such a big crater. No doubt there are stories speculating Israel dropped a nuke as well, especially in the Arab street media.

"“Secret” suppplier = North Korea. No secret no more. Nukes gone. Blown up. Kablooie."

North Korea would be my last choice of suppliers if I were Syria. Asshat has good relations with other more advanced nuke builders, such as Putin, who has been doing a lot PR building in Syria and Iran lately. Don't rule out Paki-Stan either. They had quite a nuclear proliferation ring going on as well during the Clinton Admin, which Sick Willie was just too busy selling the Chinese our missile guidance systems to bother with, even though he had to have been advised of it.

Bush shut that ring down (for which he receives little to no credit for) during his early days in office, and Paki-Stan's top nuke builder has been held under house arrest in Paki-Stan ever since, but who knows how much nuclear technology was poliferated to Syria and Iran. Even Ghaddafi (sp) had a collection of stuff which he turned over if you remember.

Methinks the Arab gentlemen do protest too little. And what has Kim Jong (mentally) Il had to say about this?

What’s your point? Your "humor" could easily be misconstrued as somewhat less than subtle antisemitism.

Kimmie didn’t like it at all. Odd, isn’t it, how a feller half a world away would care about bombs in Syria? Almost as if he had some sort of vest interest...nah...

I'm a little surprised L'il Kim didn't have the self-control to just keep his yap shut about the subject. I guess he didn't figure that commenting on a subject that shouldn't be in his country's interest would put him under immediate and obvious suspicion. Or maybe he did and just didn't care.

I’d love to know, actually. It may well be that he simply doesn’t care - the muted reaction in the world press would seem to indicate that not a lot of folks mind if Syria adds a nuclear program to its other known WMD efforts. That scares the heck out of me.

My point is that if anything has been made apparent by the latest Israeli conflict with Hezbollah it is that the entirety of the country is accessible by short range missle attack. My point is that the Israelis appear, (and I read Debka daily), to have their heads in the sand over this and finally my point is that if something isn’t done in relative short order the probability that anti-Israeli forces will have a nuke with a missle to carry it will reach 100%. The lack of understanding of this by Israeli leadership is nothing short of phenomenal. All that being the case, it’s very difficult for me to understand why anyone is making major investments in Israel and I’ve got to believe that if there’s another “conventional” missle force launched en masse against Israel in another conflict there will surely be a start to a massive outflow of capital followed by a significant downsizing of the Israeli economy. We may very well be on the brink of witnessing a major exodus of capital and people from Israel as it becomes more apparent that thanks to modern technology no place in Israel is safe from attack.
