It is this reporter's opinion that in another display of the power of American citizens working together, we have stopped an invasion on our nations highways by Mexican trucks.
The debate over Mexican trucks pouring into the United States has been waged in Congress, in the courts, in protests, at the border, and on the presidential campaign trail.
Since the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was passed in 1993, there has been a push to permit Mexican long-haul trucks to enter the United States. But now the United States Senate has voted to eliminate federal funding for the Mexican trucking pilot program.
Once again, the people, rising up in righteous anger, have expressed their opposition by saying, No amnesty, no Mexican trucking. You the people did it through your thousands of calls, faxes, e-mails, letters, and face-to-face confrontations.
You made it happen! You showed again that fighting back can work.
The Senate dealt a blow to the Bush plan to give Mexican trucking the right to free access to U.S. roads and highways. A bipartisan majority voted 74-24 to pass an amendment offered by Sen. Byron Dorgan, DN.D., to remove funding for the Mexican trucking demonstration project. Sen. Arlen Specter, RPa., joined Dorgan as co-sponsor of his amendment.
It has been an exciting debate in which opponents of Mexican trucking have cited underage Mexican truckers and their lack of driving skills, their lack of sobriety, their use of drugs, their long hours without sleep; smuggling of illegals; hauling of illegal substances; horrendous traffic jams; driving violations; damage to highway infrastructure; a lack of front-to-back inspection, and faulty equipment.
And what about motorists insurance? The uninsured Mexican trucks would cause a myriad of insurance problems to Americans including skyrocketing car insurance rates.
Another issue was the impact the Mexican trucks would have on our truckers, our teamsters in the United States. It would cost American truckers their jobs through lower wages paid to the Mexican truckers.
In the midst of the debate came a fiery collision in Mexico that occurred between two trucks carrying highly combustible chemicals that killed more than two dozen people.
Sen. Dorgan praised the U.S. Senate for its action, calling the decision a vote for safety. The Senate action represents a turning of the tide on the senseless headlong rush this country has been engaged in to dismantle safety standards and to destroy a quality of life it took generations to achieve.
Teamster General President Jim Hoffa praised the Senate for slamming the door on the Bush administrations illegal and reckless plan to open our borders to trucks from Mexico. Says Hoffa, The American people have spoken and Congress has spoken. Now its time for the Bush administration to listen to the people. We dont want to share our highways with dangerous trucks from Mexico.
The American people have spoken. Mr. Bush, did you get the message?
Bush lost his hearing and understanding of American laws years ago.
ping
Isn’t that the truth.
Truck ping!

“For decades now, he’s been warning of the danger illegal immigration poses to this country.”
yep...and many didn’t and haven’t paid him any attention...not even in the GOP no less...and George Putnam is a registered Democrat!
Wow is he still kicking? Putnam was a news commentator when I was a kid in LA in the 60s and 70s.
W is a stubborn man.
He will need to be smashed in the nose over and over again on this issue. Because he will try again. He believes in symmetries. He will think that if he is beating al queda then he must also beat Americans.
the man and his family have acted against the best interests of people they were sworn to serve. they are—to put it simply—out of line.
Was watching George on KTLA Ch 5 in the 50’s. Great guy, and always “One Reporters Opinion” with the American Flag flying.
What gets me is that today (Sunday) I received a telephone call trying to raise money for the Republican Party, and the caller said that among the reasons why we need to ensure that the Republicans win is that they are holding the line to secure the border. I thought that was rather disingenuous. A handful are, but certainly not the ones in the current administration.
>God bless George Putnam! He’s 93 years old and still going strong! For decades now, he’s been warning of the danger illegal immigration poses to this country.<
I’ll second that and add that Rep. Duncan Hunter has been right along side of him. And he’s been very effective.
>W is a stubborn man.<
W is a determined man, and must be watched diligently!
GWB likes secret meetings behind closed doors. Can anything he signs there be ratified without a vote of Congress?
Why is he allowed to move against our sovereignty without restraint?
He still has a daily talk show on Cable Radio Network on the internet,
M-F, 12 Noon-2 PM, and replayed Midnight-2 AM.

What a great patriot the 90 plus George is out here in SoCal. He has put the problem where it should reside. In the stubborn craw of the Prez on this issue of illegal immigration and kow towing to Mexico and a supposed brotherhood of Americanos, at least in trade and hiring practices.
Just curious, but since was part of NAFTA how much did Bush have to do with the decision to allow the trucks?
I haven’t followed this at all.
