Back to School!

By Naval Support Activity Chapel Staff

A child came home from his first day of school. His mother asked, “What did you learn today?” He said, “Not enough. I have to go back tomorrow.”

Going back to school is always difficult for both teachers and students. It also means more traffic with school buses back on the road, probably the only ones delighted about schools reopening are the parents.

Going back to school can be a milestone. Kindergarten, sixth grade, high school and college are all significant marks of progress and change (especially when the kid finally gets a job!). For parents, these can be good times to reflect -- and perhaps to set new goals.

It is good to reflect on memories of your kids growing up, and how proud you are of who they are becoming. It is also important to understand what they will need next as they grow and develop.

An important goal is not only to ensure that they learn reading, writing and arithmetic, but also that they learn about God as well. The Bible tells us to train and teach our children in the ways of God (Proverbs 22:6 and Ephesians 6:4). One great way to do this is to take them to church.

I went to church for the first time in seven years today.

That calls for a different sort of welcome home, DieHard.

Hi Kathy. I spent the day yesterday with Jeremy at Eagle Lake fishing. I caught one trout, and that was the extent of the fishing. However, we had a great time being together. The last time I saw him he was around 10 years old (he’s now 24). After I left him I went to to home of my dad’s best friend who lives in the same town as Jeremy’s mom. I spent around 3.5 hours there talking with him about my dad. They were friends for 35 years and went on long distance motorcycle trips several times a year just the two of them. He told me some really funny stories of the things the two of them had happen to them on the road. It was great. He knows much more about my dad than I did, and I enjoyed hearing these stories.

Very cool!!! A chance to be with family, a chance to kick back, a chance to fish....can’t beat that! And you even caught a fish! Catch and release? Eat? Glad you were able to spend time with your Dad’s friend.
