There has been a void in the Republican presidential race. The party's candidates have spoken about immigration, taxes, social issues and the war in Iraq. Mitt Romney, Rudolph Giuliani and John McCain have also spoken frequently about Ronald Reagan in order to position themselves as the political heirs to the great president.
The candidates, however, have overlooked a central idea that animated Mr. Reagan's view of government. That was federalism, the constitutional principle that the federal government's responsibilities are "few and defined" as James Madison put it.
Mr. Reagan believed the federal government had grown too big and swallowed up too many activities that, in the words of the 10th Amendment, should be left to the states and the people. Education, welfare, food stamps, and other such activities were not properly federal roles in his view. Here is Mr. Reagan kicking off his run for the presidency on Nov. 13, 1979:
"The federal government should do only those things specifically called for in the Constitution. All others shall remain with the states or the people.... The federal government has taken on functions it was never intended to perform and which it does not perform well. There should be a planned, orderly transfer of such functions to states and communities."

Very good.
Well, he's only been "occupied" with the war because his critics & the GOP establishment keep bringing it up non-stop. Perhaps if they examined his legendary voting record, they'd see that Dr. Paul not only talked the talk but walked it as well.
It's good that Fred is talking about federalism but the WashTimes shouldn't disregard Paul's record just because he doesn't toe the party line on foreign policy.
This is the true heart of conservatism.
Not any one issue.
And you are occupied with Ron Paul.
Mr. Thompson rightly argues that the abandonment of federalism has caused a range of pathologies including a lack of government accountability, the squelching of policy diversity between the states, and the overburdening of federal policymakers with local matters when they should focus on national security issues. This reminds me that Fred Thompson has a real potential issue with Katrina. Every candidate is clamoring to talk about the failing of Katrina, but they all are framing it as the federal government not doing enough. Fred Thompson has the opportunity to say the failings were because the federal government was already trying to do too much, and was interfering too much.
The governor has already been dealt with on the state level.
But of course if the governor and mayor were responsible, instead of the federal government, then perhaps they would have acted more responsibly. Instead, they said the buck stops at George Bush.
I just love how Big Gubmint GOP types are petrified of Ron Paul. He won’t “win” the election, but he will “win” something much more important and long lasting...
Forcing the GOP back to constitutional, libertarian principles or losing the 10% of their base who can swing the election.
ping
Except that Ron Paul is only polling at 2%, and all of his financial and internet “support” is coming from the anti-war, anti-globalist neo-marxists.
Real Republicans (the kind that actually vote for Republicans in elections) will be very enthusiastic about Fred Thompson.
I’m very willing to give Fred a look. To be perfectly honest with you though, I don’t like what I see so far.
Too many generalities and rhetoric and not enough substance.
I don’t think that is his doing. His political “advisors’ are telling him to keep it plain obviously.
Hell, if even a jackass with a modem like me and you know what is “wrong” with the GOP field of Rudy McRomney, he knows darn well what his lines are and why he is in the race.
I’m just sick and tired of hearing about how Dims are happy with their candidates who have accomplished absolutely nothing in their political career.
Even without Fred, Americans would take Rudy McRomney over those useless unproven 3 Dim candidates.
Fred hasn’t really had an opportunity to give specifics yet.
It will come in time, and they will be guided by a philosophy of limited government and states’ rights.
There is just massive corruption in LA. All this federal money was sent to LA way before Katrina. We heard story after story about the millions that were sent to LA for flood prevention, especially for New Orleans(one of the greatest cities on earth). What happened to it?? My guess is, corrupt cracker dems that run the state saw to it that their cronies got to ride the fed gravy train and wasted it.
That’s what we are all waiting to hear. I’m rooting for him. We are waiting with baited breath.
That's because L.Ron's position is deal-breakingly bad, and the word must get out.
I think that would be “bated” breath, as in “abatement” (halting).
We are waiting with baited breath.

I had a sneaking suspicion that you were in fact George Will with his thesaurus and dictionary posting under the moniker Petronski on FR.
Hi George, I usually love your stuff, but you’ve lost a few MPH off your best fastball lately.
I just thought you were waiting for Fred to throw you a fish...
