One of the bad things about bringing up a core principle like federalism is that the media will be sure you are hit with every potential hypocrisy, or have to explain every time they thing Republicans have violated that principle in the past.
Frankly I always thought a right to life was as important a federal principle as any other. What good are the other rights if you don't have a right to life (provided you aren't going around taking other people's life away from them).

My pick is Duncan Hunter, but I'm no Fred basher.
We'd all be a lot better off if politics stopped being a game of gotcha where everybody needs to have an instant opinion on every topic, and if they express an instant opinion but mangle their words, well, that first, inadequate response is held over their head forever. Give me a break!
If a politician says "I don't remember the details, I'm not able to express an opinion at this time" that makes good sense to me.

“No Child Left Behind good concept, I’m all for testing but it seems like now some of these states are teaching to the test and kind of making it so that everybody does well on the test you can’t really tell that everybody’s doing that well. And it’s not objective,” Thompson said.”
I’m sorry to all of you Fred supporters, but this is exactly what the Democrat (lazy, no accountability) teachers unions say about testing. I keep reading on here how Thompson is the great white hope but so far, he is luke warm at best. Still no major TV interviews, still no campaign adds, still no real platform. And yes I have been to his websites, however Howard Dean proved you can't win a nomination via the Internet.

I just checked on something.. during the time the Schiavo situation was going on, Thompson was heading the advisory group to help nominate John Robers to the USSC. Right after Robert’s nomination (Schiavo case still going on), Thompson was chairing of the International Security Advisory Board (chaired this until July 2007).. so yea, he had a lot of time to get involved with this case.. Little, unimportant things like the Supreme Court and Terrorism going on, Thompson had no excuse to not be personally involved in this case.//sarc

I like this reply by Fred.
It signals that he will not allow the President to be some organ-grinder's monkey for the press.
If he doesn't feel like extemporaneously opining on some complex issue, then, fine.
For crying out loud, the whole campaigning process, let alone the whole political culture, has devolved into the press just trying to trick the candidate into saying something he is not prepared to say.
Clinton took one route to deal with this problem as president, which was to just say babbling bull$hit all the time: platitudes like, "There's enough right about the country to fix what's wrong about the country," and other concatenations of cant and sheer words without meaning -- except, of course, when he was lying, dissembling or prevaricating.
Fred is taking more the FDR route... FDR would say stuff like, "I don't have anything to say about that today," which he would rectify when and if he chose to at a later date.
The Constitution says that the President is supposed to report to Congress "from time to time", not in ridiculous daily press conferences or monthly or whatever.
The worst thing about the Presidency now is that the press are allowed in to the White House at all. Fred ought to boot them all out of the White House and turn the press briefing room back into a bowling alley or a swimming pool or whatever Nixon had it as.
Throw the press out, regain some dignity for the office and the country.
The President should manipulate the press, not the other way around, as it is now.

A couple of interesting things here...
1) "No child left behind" predates the Terri Schaivo case, and yet he can't remember the more recent?
2) His opinions on "No child left behind" are almost a verbatum quote from the NEA.
Before I read this I was much more positively inclined towards Thompson.

Thompson, a former Tennessee senator who left office in 2003, did say, "Local matters generally speaking should be left to the locals. I think Congress has got an awful lot to keep up with."
This is a good small-government position for Fred (and all the other GOP candidates too!).
The federal government is so bloated and huge and tries to do so many things that it ends up not being able to do anything well. Look at the FEMA/Katrina failures for a quick example.
Federal government needs to shrink to become more manageable. The states can handle the same jobs much more efficiently and with programs appropriate for their states, their populations and their problems.
Now, to me, Fred is sounding the right themes as a conservative candidate.
