Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with Netherlands Defense Minister Elmert van Middlekoop.
Enjoy your visit to Sanity Island

As I could not find any new quote for today I felt it apt in view of his address to the nationa later tonight to quote from the Inaugural speech of the President at the beginning of his first term. QUOTE OF THE DAY
President George W. Bush's Inaugural Address
January 20, 2001
The enemies of liberty and our country should make no mistake: America remains engaged in the world by history and by choice, shaping a balance of power that favors freedom. We will defend our allies and our interests. We will show purpose without arrogance. We will meet aggression and bad faith with resolve and strength. And to all nations, we will speak for the values that gave our nation birth.
After the Declaration of Independence was signed, Virginia statesman John Page wrote to Thomas Jefferson: ``We know the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong. Do you not think an angel rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm?''
Much time has passed since Jefferson arrived for his inauguration. The years and changes accumulate. But the themes of this day he would know: our nation's grand story of courage and its simple dream of dignity.
We are not this story's author, who fills time and eternity with his purpose. Yet his purpose is achieved in our duty, and our duty is fulfilled in service to one another.
Never tiring, never yielding, never finishing, we renew that purpose today, to make our country more just and generous, to affirm the dignity of our lives and every life.
This work continues. This story goes on. And an angel still rides in the whirlwind and directs this storm.
God bless you all, and God bless America.

FOX NEWS POLL: BUSH APPROVAL UP; NEARLY HALF OF AMERICANS THINK SURGE HELPED IN IRAQ
[And if Opinion Dynamics ever bothered to survey a REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE of Americans, they would actually discover that the President’s JA rating is in the 40s . . . For this survey OD oversampled Democrats by a mere 11 points (44%D vs 33%R!]

INVESTORS BUSINESS DAILY (IBD) POLL
. . . We too are in the polling business using a transparent methodology that assures a random sampling of U.S. adults. The questions we recently asked about the war and national security generated quite different responses. For instance:
70% of Americans believe any withdrawal from Iraq should be gradual much as Petraeus has insisted. (Democrats, by the way, backed a gradual withdrawal by 73% vs. 71% for Republicans, despite demands from many party leaders for an immediate pullout.)
69% think we should boost surveillance of terrorists, while 61% say its OK to wiretap suspected terrorists without a court warrant.
63% believe we should keep prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, and 59% have no problem with detaining non-U.S. terrorist suspects in foreign jails.
Quite a different picture one that suggests a stiffening of American spines on national security.
We should also note that, contrary to other surveys, the IBD/TIPP Poll shows President Bush rallying off his own personal lows. In our most recent sounding, his favorability rating hit 40.2% the highest since March and his third straight monthly gain.

MUST READ . . .
THE DEMOCRATS’ MORAL BANKRUPTCY
By INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY
War On Terror: Congress’ Democratic leaders obviously did not listen to what Gen. David Petraeus said this week. Their plan is to lose in Iraq in hopes it will win them the White House. But Americans aren’t buying.
. . . It’s hard to see how Bush can be denied a lion’s share of the credit for Iraq’s success when, as recently as last December, all bets were that official Washington would shove the diplomatic approach endorsed by the Baker-Hamilton Iraq Study Group down the president’s throat.
The White House bet against that conventional wisdom, and now it’s clear who won. Democrats, on the other hand, bet the farm on America losing the Iraq war. Now their moral chips are gone.
