In terms of crime, I would say that West Palm Beach, Riviera Beach, Belle Glade, and much (though not all) of Tampa are worse.
The only nabes I ever felt nervous in when I lived down there were in Overtown (immediately adjacent to the old downtown) and the NW 79th Street corridor (Liberty City). N. Biscayne was a little unnerving due to the druggie prostitutes, but I've seen that all over the world.
Meanwhile, I would walk around Doral or Coral Gables at 2AM alone and not feel unsafe at all.

I actually live in Coral Gables. Yes I feel absolutely safe to walk around the Gables at any time of day or night. Safe enough that I usually only have a S&W M642 in a pocket holster. If I go anywhere else, especially in the far south of the county and into the Keys, I'm usually armed with either a Sig P226 or a Sig P245. This afternoon, I'm heading out to run errands wi this going on and I'm wearing my Sig P226 9mm Blackwater special edition. Wearing my new holster, a "tuckable" from CROSSBREED HOLSTERS which allows me to neatly conceal a full size sidearm like the P226 while only wearing a short sleeve shirt as cover, shirt tucked in.
