Where Were You On 9-11-2001?

By PsyOp

There are seminal event in history that imprint on peoples minds an indelible mark never to be forgotten.

Pearl Harbor. The Kennedy Assassination. These are events that no adult American who lived through them will ever forget. All can tell you where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. Many of us who were not around then have heard the stories.

9/11/2001 is another such event. We all remember where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news. But some would have us all forget.

I will never forget the day when a nightmare turned out to be true…

I was asleep in bed that morning. I was having a bad dream.

I was in the midst of a disjointed nightmare about being aboard an airplane that had been hijacked and was out of control (it may sound as if I am making this up, but I am not). The dream was vivid, chaotic, scary.

Was it some freakish coincidence? No. It was the result of having my alarm clock set to a lock talk radio station. When the alarm went off, news of the first plane hitting the towers must have hit my sub-conscience like a jack-hammer.

As I started to wake, as the nightmare began to fade, I thought I must still be dreaming. Hugh Hewitt was talking about a commercial jet that had just slammed into one of the World Trade towers and was speculating that it might be terrorism. A dream within a dream?

It took a moment to realize that I was no longer dreaming, but when it sank in I was instantly awake. I jumped from bed and ran to the TV, turning on FOX news. I was greeted with live footage of one of the trade towers with fire and smoke pouring from a gaping hole in its side. As I sat listening to the commentary, trying to get my mind around what happened, another jet flew in from the side of the TV screen and slammed into the second tower.

I saw it. I knew that it meant we were at war. But it was too surreal. I must still be dreaming. Go back to bed, close your eyes, it will all go away. These and other thoughts flashed in my mind.

The nightmare I had awakened from was real. Granted, I was not actually on an airplane when I awoke, but others were. For them there was no waking up in a warm bed, or the luxury of seeing it all play out from a televised distance. For them there was no option of hitting the snooze button, rolling over, and hoping it would all go away.

Six year later, some in this country would like us all to do just that. To some, that day was just a bad dream we can all roll over and forget.

We must never forget.

Where were you? What were you doing? I’d like to know.

Wow! I’m glad none of your family managed to get on the wrong airplane that day. That had to be nerve-wracking. Thanks for the story.

...when I saw that a second plane was coming from the right of the screen, I thought it might be a water carrier like they use out west for forest fires. I know -dumb- but I only had time for that one thought...

Not dumb. That's a far more rational thought than believing someone is sick enough to fly an airplane full of people into a building on purpose. 9/11 was a day where rational thought was suspended.

he said “seminal” heh heh heh

I was referring to#3 & #4, not #1

1. pertaining to, containing, or consisting of semen.
2. Botany. of or pertaining to seed.
3. having possibilities of future development.
4. highly original and influencing the development of future events: a seminal artist; seminal ideas.

NO ONE SMILED. It was like NIght of the Living Dead on my drive home.

I recall that, too. Thanks for reminding me. Those are the kind of details that tend to slip from the mind with the passage of time.

I can’t imagine the worry of having a family member in any of the WTC buildings that day. I am glad your wife was not injured.

Your dream trumps mine. I can attribute mine to the clock radio impinging on my dreaming mind. Yours was a bit more prophetic.

I still break down and cry when I try and tell someone about it in person. Luckily, you can’t see my eyes tearing up now. I have posted my dream several times on FR since the attack and I build up enough courage to try and tell a few people in person, but I can never make it past the angel without sobbing.

I was having my first cup of coffee and watching Fox News like I do most mornings.

I don't remember eating or doing anything the rest of the day except watching the coverage on TV.

I felt a sense of shock and disbelief.

I knew the context he was using it, but I was trying to lighten it up a bit with some old Beavis and Butthead humor.

Where were you? What were you doing? I’d like to know.

On 9/11/01 I was scheduled to help paint a church in Brooklyn, I didn’t even turn on the TV that morning. While ridding across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge I saw the north tower in flames. All that day the pastors wife would bring us news, the south tower fell, the north tower fell, while we painted the walls pretty much in a state of shock. While taking a break buying a coke from a local store I watched the smoke drift over Brooklyn.

My wife was on an express bus heading into Manhattan that morning. The Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn is elevated and the entire bus saw the second plane fly over the harbor and into the south tower. They (the passengers) immediately told the driver to turn around, but being a bus driver he had to call the dispatcher to find out what to do. They turned back to Staten Island. On the way home that night I tell you I’ve have never seen New York City that quiet.

Have you ever ridden on a train and smelled the brakes while it’s coming into the station (metallic dust)? The entire city smelled like that for weeks after.

I know you knew the context. I was being tongue and cheek right back at you.
