Valencia M. McClatchey thought she was doing the right thing when she gave the F.B.I. a copy of her photo of the mushroom-shaped cloud that rose over the hill outside her home after United Flight 93 crashed in a field here on Sept. 11, 2001.
And, after it became apparent that hers was the only known picture of that ominous gray cloud — and the first taken after Flight 93 crashed — Mrs. McClatchey thought she was still doing the right thing when she gave copies to people who asked for them, and let newspapers and television stations use it.
But fame for the photo has had an unexpected cost for the photographer.
“Every time I’ve done any stories it goes online and all these conspiracy theorists start up and they call me and harass me,” said Mrs. McClatchey, 51, who runs her own real estate company.
In online postings, critics have ripped apart every element of the photo and Mrs. McClatchey’s life. They accuse her of faking the photo, of profiteering from it and of being part of a conspiracy to cover up that the government shot down Flight 93.
They claim the mushroom cloud is from an ordnance blast, not a jet crashing; the cloud is the wrong color for burning jet fuel; the cloud is too small and in the wrong position.
They have posted her personal e-mail address, phone numbers and street address online. One Canadian “9/11 debunker” surreptitiously taped a phone conversation with her, questioning her about the photo, and then uploaded it to his Web site.

These nuts on the left are scum
These must be the sam mutts who believe that fire can’t bend steel. Hmmm.
I guess this falls under “no good deed goes unrewarded”, but I wish I could send my appreciation to this lady. She has done and is doing the right thing.
Unfortunately the left doesn't have a monopoly on nuts.
There are many who try to make money off 9/11 by promoting their conspiracy theories.
There is a special place in Hell for the,

There is a special place in Hell for them.
It’s wierd that we have a Bin Laden video today taking responsibility and a last will and testament from one of the hijackers yet the conspiracy freaks still think Bush did it.
I started thinking the same, but realized: the photo is her intellectual property, and she is reasonably controlling it. It’s not the NYT’s to publish.

The Times can’t let it go, even on the anniversary of 9-11.
The “paper of record” is propaganda through and through.
We found it at the same time.
Hardly a “mushroom cloud”.
If they were only just from the left...
Heck, many moons ago when I was a line boy at the local county airport we used to burn the trash on Sunday evening and we'd get a bigger "mushroom cloud" than that one. In fact, we got a bit carried away once and set off a pile of trash with 10 gallons of avgas. That one brought the fire department....and an end to our trash burning fun......
Amen. We have our share of folks that think every photo on the web is a Photoshop in front of a conspiracy.
That’s the beauty of being a conspiracy freak; you don’t have to say you’re wrong. You just add whatever proves you wrong to the conspiracy.
I deal with a conspiracy theorist on another forum. No matter what I put up to show him he’s wrong, he just gives me the “you’re a victim of the conspiracy,” line and dismisses what I put up.
That simple picture vividly heralds the death of innocent people and the idiot “truthers” dishonor them with their paranoia.
