The University of Michigan has been historically really good at two things; liberal politics and football. On the political side, it is appropriate that one of the most leftist colleges in the country is located in a state where a Canadian socialist ex-beauty queen Governor is the sock puppet of union kingpins, but the fabric of the universe can only take so much.
Karma was perfectly happy to look the other way when it became school policy to treat student applicants like guests at an upside down paper bag party. It probably even let out a little guffaw of amusement as Bill Clinton gave the students commencement speech in the spring of 2007. The former President talked about moral responsibility while scanning the audience for an impressionable young co-ed who would be willing to show him the true meaning of Northern Exposure.
Karma finally had it when U of M decided that Muslims were exempt from the liberal commandment of Separation of Church and State. When the karmic bomb was dropped on the school, it exploded on their greatest source of pride; the football team.
Like most NCAA 1-A programs, the Michigan Wolverines schedule a few teams that would struggle against the football squad that represents the learning institution from Disneys High School Musical. This not only gives a team like Michigan a guaranteed win, but they get to feel what it would be like if Godzilla decided to visit Mayberry instead of Tokyo. Things didnt go as planned this year. On the first game of the 2007 college season, Karma used the Appalachian State Mountaineer football team to give the mighty Wolverines the sort of rogering that most people have not seen since Ned Beatty was told to squeal like a pig during the film Deliverance.
The loss to Appalachian State was the first time a division 1-AA team had beaten a 1-A team ranked in the AP college poll. Not only does Michigan have to live down this shame, but they came into the season ranked 5th in the nation and were a favorite to win the National Championship. Now their championship dreams have gone up in a puff of Mountaineer black and gold. So why, specifically, did Karma decide to treat the Wolverines like Abner Louima in the basement of New Yorks 70th Precinct station house in Brooklyn?
Most folks may or may not know this, but the University of Michigan will be using public funds to install foot washing stations in the bathrooms of two or their campuses. The purpose behind this move is to make it easier for Muslim students to follow the dictates of Mohammed and wash their feet before prayer.
In light of the fact that this is a public University using public funds to install something for a religious use, I think this violates the same separation of church and state edict that Christians are annually beaten about the head with when they utter the words Merry Christmas anywhere near public land.
The argument for the footbath is that it is unsafe and unsanitary for Muslims to wash their feet in the public sinks. Considering the fact that Aquafina has recently admitted that they have actually been selling us tap water for years, I do not understand why the college cannot simply designate the public sinks a foot free zone, install some vending machines that sell bottled water, and let the Muslim students work the complicated details out for themselves. The college would even make money as the vending machine sales of water sky rockets. Instead they opted to soak the tax payers and make them pay for somebody elses dogmatic rituals.
For the moment we will ignore my opinion that Muslims may as well be praying to Sponge Bob. In the cosmic scheme of things, how clean their feet are will probably be the least of their problems when the afterlife takes them by complete surprise. The problem here is the tax dollars being used by a college who has in the past used the Separation of Church and State argument against Christians.
Right now they are trying to sell the foot baths as something that will benefit all students and visitors alike and is completely in line with the societal pluralism they are trying to promote. Seeing as this is something that is for general use, I wonder if they would have a problem if I used the foot bath when the stalls are all full, or walked my pet pig Wilbur on to the campus and used the public facility to give him a little bath?
I have been corresponding with a representative at the college who seems to be getting increasingly annoyed. In my last email to him I have offered to arrange for the financing of an artistically designed cross that will stand on their campus grounds. As a work of art, all the students and visitors may enjoy it, and it will serve as an object of inspiration for the thousands of students who are Catholics or Christians.
Considering the fact that my proposal includes a six foot square plot of the public Universities land, which will be tiled with brick pavers and have seating incorporated into the design, all students may make use of the stone benches that will be situated around the cross. This satisfies the requirement that it be something that can be used by everyone and is also in line with the schools advocacy of a pluralist society. In other words the University should not have a problem with this unless Catholics and Christians do not figure into their pluralist society.
As of the writing of this column, the University of Michigan has not responded to any of my emails or phone calls on this matter.
I heard Tom Brady interviewed yesterday and not surprisingly Mike Vrabel is putting him through hell.
they should wash a pig in the footbaths, get it on film for all to see
Is there anything better than an 0-2 Michigan going up against an 0-2 Notre Dame?
Yes. 2-0 ND against 0-2 Mich.
Dearborn has about 100,000 Arabic speakers and there is a Mosque about a mile from Campus. There are many many Arabic students from all over the Middle East that attend U of M Dearborn.
That is irrelevent, it is still tax payer land for a religous purpose. Don’t the Wolverines represent all UM campuses?
In college football, there is not much better. This is the one game each year that I do root for Michigan though.
Perhaps its “allah’s” way of getting them to give up the “pigskin”.
Nothing better in the world—unless it’s also Ohio State at 0-2.
No.
Does everything have to be political? LOL.
Could it be that Appie State simply has an awesome football team?
Um, no. But it sure was sweet to see the fans' faces when they lost this past week. Stunned.
Actually, this is Karma getting them back for saying the Gators didn't have the right to play the Buckeyes last year for the championship. Boy, has that come back to bite them in the ass.
Technically, that wouldn't be a "hate crime" because the footbaths aren't supposed to be religious in nature.
That's not funny and in VERY bad taste. The author should be ashamed, and the editor should have excised that line.
i know. the admins at the campus will be holding their mouths shut. Muslims would then refuse to use them and all that taxpayer mullah (lol) is wasted.
